Job Description
Overview Zephyr Wind is purpose-built to support the wind industry from the ground up. We offer key wind drivetrain, generator services and parts specifically designed to reduce downtime at medium and large-scale wind farms. Zephyr offers complete Repower and new construction services. Zephyr is a major service center for nearly all original equipment manufacturers and our compliances and certifications ensure wind turbine components receive the highest quality work. SUMMARY The Senior / Lead Winder is responsible for the rewinding, repair, and testing of three-phase electric motors and generators, with a strong focus on quality, efficiency, and technical accuracy. This role serves as a technical leader within the winding team, providing guidance, mentoring, and support while ensuring all work meets company standards, customer specifications, and applicable safety requirements.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB
Key Responsibilities Perform complete rewind and repair of three-phase AC motors and generators, including form coil and random wind applications (Rotor and Stator). Analyze motor/generator failures and determine appropriate repair methods. Interpret winding diagrams, electrical schematics, and manufacturer specifications. Lead and support less experienced winders through training, troubleshooting, and quality oversight. Create winding diagrams, winding layouts, and training documentation. Ensure proper selection and use of materials (wire, insulation systems, varnish, etc.) with engineering support. Conduct and/or verify electrical testing (surge, hi-pot, resistance, polarity, and rotation checks). Maintain high standards of workmanship, efficiency, and cleanliness in the winding area. Follow all safety procedures and promote a strong safety culture within the shop. Communicate effectively with supervisors, technicians, and other departments regarding job status and technical issues. Assist with process improvements, standard work development, and quality initiatives as needed.KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Advanced technical knowledge of motor winding and repair practices, including 3-phase rotor windings. Leadership and mentoring capabilities without formal management requirements. Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills. Effective communication and teamwork. Time management skills with the ability to prioritize workload.EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION
Minimum 5-7 years of hands-on motor winding experience, with a strong focus on three-phase motors and generators. Proven ability to independently rewind and repair a wide range of motor sizes and configurations. Experience in a senior, lead, or mentoring role preferred. Strong understanding of electrical theory related to AC motors and generators. Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, specifications, and test results. High attention to detail and commitment to quality workmanship. Experience with EASA and IEEE or similar industry standards preferred. Familiarity with supervisory or lead-level responsibilities without direct management duties. Physical demand The following are basic physical requirements of the position. Have adequate vision to complete all required tasks including viewing reports and tablet screens. Steel toe shoes are required. Safety glasses required.
