Job Description

PURPOSE OF POSITION
Maintain and repair all county light and heavy equipment and to assure safe working conditions for all County equipment. The work is performed under the direction of the Shop Manager.
WORK PERFORMED/JOB FUNCTIONS
Maintain and repair all County equipment including performing preventative maintenance and recording maintenance and repairs. Perform maintenance and repair work in areas such as hydraulic and airbrake systems, electrical systems, tire repair and replacement, general tune-ups and maintenance, and vehicle exterior maintenance. Perform general mechanical servicing on numerous County cars, pick-up trucks, motor graders, cranes, dump trucks, snowplows, etc. Perform equipment fabrication when necessary. Perform complete overhauls on gas and diesel engines, automatic and standard transmissions, drivelines, hydraulic pumps, carburetors, motor grader, tandems, differentials, hydraulic motors, hoses, control valve bodies, etc. Clean and maintain County maintenance shop in orderly, efficient and safe manner, and make building repairs as assigned. Performs other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Able to make independent judgments in the repair of equipment, must be familiar with all phases of mechanical repair and maintenance involving automobiles, light and heavy equipment, communicate with people to convey or exchange professional information, interact with people and receive general instructions. Must be physically able to operate a variety of machines and equipment including a motor grader, snowplow truck, backhoe, tractor, skid steer loader and various trucks including a semi and tandem. Be able to utilize mathematical formulas; add and subtract; multiply and divide totals; determine time and weight; and interpret same as may be appropriate. Read a variety of documents including maps, vehicle maintenance manuals, policy manuals, sign manuals, and related guides. Complete reports, various documents, and designs with proper format, punctuation, spelling and grammar, using all parts of speech. Requires a high degree of mechanical ability and the knowledge and skill to implement mechanical repairs.
MINIMUM TRAINING, EXPERIENCE OR CERTIFICATIONS
Requires a high school diploma, and one to two years additional post-secondary training with emphasis in heavy and light equipment repair and maintenance or general mechanical area, with two to four years of related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Must have or be able to obtain a Commercial Class A (CDL) Driver's License and Tanker Endorsement within six-months of employment.
PHYSICAL EFFORT
Light to medium physical activities requiring climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, handling, feeling, talking, hearing, near and far acuity, depth perception, and color vision. The employee must occasionally lift and or move up to 50 pounds. Work in the field will include exposure to weather, proximity to moving, mechanical parts, vibration, exposure to electrical shock, exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, confined/restricted areas and working in high, exposed places as well as inside work in a shop setting.

$30.96 - $40.73
