Job Description

Community Planning & Building Director - Carmel-by-the-Sea, California Carmel-by-the-Sea is a one-of-a-kind village where creativity, natural beauty, and community spirit come together. If you are a collaborative, outgoing leader with a passion for planning and building in a historic coastal community, this is your opportunity to make a lasting impact. Located along the Pacific Ocean in northwest Monterey County, Carmel-by-the-Sea is renowned for its white sand beaches, dramatic bluffs, verdant urban forest, and rich artistic heritage. Founded by artists and writers, the City continues to attract visitors and residents who value its unique character, vibrant cultural scene, and exceptional quality of life. With no formal sidewalks or streetlights in residential areas and over 80 acres of parklands, Carmel retains its charming, forest-like atmosphere while delivering high-quality services to residents and visitors alike. The City Administrator is seeking a hands-on, results-oriented leader to serve as the Community Planning & Building Director. This at-will position requires a Bachelor's degree in urban planning, public administration, or a related field (Master's degree highly desirable) and a minimum of seven years of progressively responsible administrative experience, including at least five years of supervisory experience. Strong knowledge of California land use planning, CEQA, historic preservation, and coastal planning is preferred. The annual salary for this position is $197,418 - $239,963, with an excellent benefits package, including CalPERS retirement, 85% employer-paid medical premiums, fully paid dental and vision for employee and dependents, deferred compensation contributions, wellness reimbursement, and generous leave benefits.
