PLANNING & DEVELOPMENT SERVICES INTERN 1

1484) The City of Overland Park has a full-time Planning & Development Services Intern 1 position available in the Planning & Development Services Department.SUMMARY:
The internship position lasts approximately 8-10 weeks. Works under the direction of the Strategic Planning Manager, but coordinates with all five divisions of the Planning & Development Services Department. Gains practical experience in a municipal planning and development environment. Develops core administrative, research, and technical skills relevant to city planning. Understands the daily operations and interdependencies of various city departments. Produces tangible contributions to city projects and initiatives. The intern will be responsible forpleting one project and supporting two additional projects, depending on department needs and intern interests. The intern will be exposed to the operations of the entire department and receive assignments from the various divisionsDUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Provides professional staff assistance to the Building Safety, Community Services, Current Planning, Engineering Services and Strategic Planning Divisions on a wide variety of tasks Coordinates with Community Services staff on a Rental Licensing Program Annual Assists with two additional projects from a department-curated list, depending on the immediate needs of the department and the interests of the intern. Attends Planning Commission meetings, as available. Participates in job shadowing and professional development/mentoring activities. Bes familiar with personnel handbook/manuals, city operating procedures and procedures, and administrative policies. Investigates and responds to citizen calls andplaints. appropriate staff members as necessary. Seeks and coordinates corrective action. Follows up to ensure issues are resolved Assists the organization with planned events and activities, as needed. Prepares a report, summarizing internship experience and presents the information to key staff members. Performs other projects and duties as assigned.REQUIREMENTS
:EDUCATION & SPECIAL LICENSE
(S)/CERTIFICATIONS:
High school diploma or equivalent. Bachelor's degree in the following field(s) of study: Current enrollment in an undergraduate or graduate degree program in Urban Planning, Landscape Architecture, Architecture or Architectural Studies, Geography, Public Administration/Policy, Political Science, or a closely related field preferred. Master's degree in the following field(s) of study: Current enrollment in an undergraduate or graduate degree program in Urban Planning, Landscape Architecture, Architecture or Architectural Studies, Geography, Public Administration/Policy, Political Science, or a closely related field preferred. Valid Driver's license preferredEXPERIENCE
; No experience required SKILLS Analytical skills, including research skills, ability to interpret data, ability to conceptualize, ability to analyze information, and ability to write formal rmendations based on findings.
