  • Full-time Due to the upcoming retirement of our Planning & Inspections Director, the Town of Aberdeen, situated in the growing NC Sandhills Region adjacent to Pinehurst and Southern Pines, is seeking a proven leader to join our team as the next Planning & Inspections Director.
Aberdeen's history as a commercial, industrial, and railroad hub serving the greater southern Moore County region is balanced by a rate of growth over the past 10+ years that has highlighted the need for preservation of the community's character through responsible development and long-range vision. The successful candidate for this position will lead the Planning & Inspections Department's high-performing team of seven professional staff and build upon a strong foundation of success. The position will report directly to the Town Manager. Relationship-building through regular engagement with elected and appointed board members, developers, community stakeholders, and regional partners is key to the Director's success in shaping decisions that have direct impact on the quality of experience for Aberdeen's residents and business community. The successful candidate will be a hands-on leader and collaborator with an interest in developing less-senior staff through mentorship and role-modeling. The position will require above-average organizational skills, excellent oral and written communications, the ability to manage multiple projects with competing deadlines in a fast-paced environment, and will possess a broad working knowledge of planning and community development activities. Aberdeen currently has a number of significant projects underway including several residential subdivisions, new commercial development, and a unique mixed-use redevelopment project with the Town serving as a major stakeholder. The Town's UDO has undergone a rigorous review resulting in recent updates and is 160D compliant.
Requirements:
Bachelor's Degree from an accredited university, with a preference of major course work in urban and regional planning, landscape architecture, public administration, business administration, geography or related field. North Carolina planning experience and GIS experience are preferred. A minimum of 8 years of experience in a planning field is preferred, in addition to a minimum of 4 years supervisory experience. AICP and CZO certifications are strongly preferred. Must possess a valid NC driver's license and ability to work flexible hours, including substantial evening meetings as needed. The successful applicant must be able to successfully pass a pre-employment drug screen, background investigation, and credit check.
Hiring range:
$98,462
  • $125,000, with excellent benefits package including 5% 401-k contribution, LGERS membership, paid medical, dental and life insurance, 12 paid holidays + paid birthday day off, vacation and sick leave, up to a $5,000 annual longevity payment, up to a $2,500 annual retention bonus payment, and up to 50% paid retiree medical insurance.
