Job Description
Org. Setting and ReportingThis position is in the Programme Management Unit (PMU), under the Office of the Director of the Economic Analysis and Policy Division (EAPD) of the Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA). The
EAPD/DESA
is mandated to provide research and policy analysis on global macroeconomic trends and long-term development issues to the General Assembly and Economic and Social Council, to support Member States in their efforts to implement the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and achieve the Sustainable Development Goals. The Economics Affairs Officer reports to the Director of the Division. For more information, see: https://policy.desa.un.org/ ResponsibilitiesEconomic analysis:
- Monitors economic developments in a defined area and identifies recurrent and emerging issues of concern to the United Nations.
- Designs and conducts studies of selected issues in economic development, prepares and reviews drafts for reports and other publications.
- Interprets and applies results of econometric modelling to analysis of economic prospects and policies.
- Develops draft policy recommendations pertaining to area of work.
- Formulates proposals for development strategies, policies and measures for presentation to intergovernmental bodies and others.
- Attends international, regional, and national meetings to hold discussions with representatives of other institutions.
- Serves as the focal point of the Division for coordinating and managing the delivery of briefing notes, talking points, and other inputs required by the Office of the Under Secretary-General, DESA.
- Supports the Director's substantive review of the Division's publications, to ensure analytical rigor and consistency of messaging. Intergovernmental support
- Provides substantive support on economic issues to intergovernmental bodies such as the Second Committee of the General Assembly, and the Economic and Social Council and its High-Level Political Forum.
Technical cooperation:
- Reviews and monitors technical cooperation projects.
- Prepares global, regional, national or sector analyses that provide a basis for advising national governments on economic development issues. General
- Supervises junior staff in the Programme Management Unit, reviewing their work and providing feedback.
- Coordinates the Division's participation in intra- and inter-departmental initiatives across the UN system, including engagement with UN Economist Network, CEB, and other inter-agency platforms.
- Supports the Director in all activities related to the work programme, such as the preparation of the Strategic Framework, Proposed Programme Budget, Programme Performance Report, and Capacity Development as executed by the Division, including responses to questions from ACABQ and CPC as related to the work programme.
- Organizes training activities for the Division, both internally and externally.

EducationAdvanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in economics or related field is required. A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree. Job - Specific QualificationNot available. Work ExperienceA minimum of seven years of progressively responsible experience in economic research and analysis, policy formulation, application of economic principles in development programmes or related area is required. Experience in coordinating workstreams and collaborating with colleagues and experts both within and outside the UN system to undertake research and analysis of emerging developing issues with global implications culminating in technical reports, policy papers, and presentations is required. LanguagesEnglish and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this job opening, English is required.
