SONAR , the industry's leading high-frequency supply chain intelligence platform, is seeking a sharp, communicative, and media-savvy Economist . This isn't a role for someone who wants to hide behind academic papers. In this position, you will be the bridge between traditional economic indicators (GDP, CPI, industrial production, consumer spending) and real-time freight market data (spot rates, tender rejections, and volume indices). You will synthesize complex data into highly readable daily/weekly articles, comprehensive research reports, and actionable market commentary. Crucially, you will bring your insights to life as a regular on-air contributor for our live daily broadcast, FreightWaves Today . This position is located in Downtown Chattanooga, TN and requires regular in-office work. Key Responsibilities Research & Reporting:
Track, analyze, and interpret general macroeconomic trends and translate what they mean for the truckload, maritime, rail, and air freight markets. Content Generation:
Write high-quality, data-driven articles, white papers, and regular commentary for the SONAR subscriber base and FreightWaves.com, delivering clear "so-what" takeaways for shippers, carriers, and 3PLs. Media & On-Air Presence:
Appear regularly on our live daily show, FreightWaves Today , alongside hosts and industry executives to discuss breaking economic data, trade policy, tariff impacts, and rate cycles. SONAR Data Utilization:
Master the SONAR platform to leverage proprietary, high-frequency data points (like the National Truckload Index, Outbound Tender Reject Indices, etc.) to back up economic hypotheses. Thought Leadership:
Represent SONAR at industry conferences, webinars, and client briefings, presenting complex economic realities in an engaging, digestible manner. Qualifications & Skills Education:
Bachelor's or Master's degree in Economics, Finance, Statistics, or a deeply related quantitative field. Experience:
3-5+ years of experience as an economic analyst, market researcher, or financial journalist. Experience specifically within logistics, supply chain, transport equities, or commodities is highly preferred but not strictly mandatory if you are a fast learner. Media Chops:
Strong, comfortable verbal communication skills with the ability to articulate economic theories on live television without relying on jargon. Prior broadcast, podcast, or public speaking experience is a massive plus. Writing Excellence:
Exceptional written communication. You must be able to write clearly and engagingly on deadline, transforming dry data points into compelling narratives. Analytical Toolset:
Strong proficiency in data analysis. Experience with tools like Excel (advanced), SQL, R, or Python is highly valued, along with a quick aptitude for navigating SaaS data dashboards (SONAR).
