Our mission is to educate and equip people to advocate for policies and programs that can help end hunger in the U.S. and around the world.PRIMARY OBJECTIVES
Provide organizational leadership, strategic advice and implementation strategies on domestic legislative policies affecting people living in poverty and hunger in the U.S. Raise Bread's profile and amplify the voices of persons impacted by hunger on Capitol Hill. Serve as a liaison for Bread's work at the federal government level. Identify emerging trends on relevant policy issues. Initiate projects based on specified domestic issue areas as assigned and in collaboration and in support of the relevant teams, such as Organizing & Faith Engagement (OFE) and the Policy, Research Institute (PRI),at Bread.PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES/ACTIVITIES
Strategic Planning, Management, and Program Oversight Bring excitement, enthusiasm, and a faith lens to Bread's policy issues. Support the Government Relations Director and serve as a subject matter expert on domestic anti-hunger issues contributing to the Director's and the Department's overall direction of policy initiatives. Recommend future policy and programmatic efforts related to the issues assigned to your portfolio. Coordinate and synchronize domestic policy goals across Bread in coordination with the government relations team; ensure alignment with organizational vision, values, and mission. Be accountable, ensuring delivery of programs that meet deadlines, contribute to overall results, and fulfill the overall mission. External Engagement and Support Support outreach and engagement with key organizations, partners and leaders, and influencers relevant to the domestic policy portfolio across the government and Bread for the World coalitions, partners, and associates in the private sector, academia, not-for-profits, philanthropy, and DC-based offices of churches/denominations. Develop and execute key relationships on Capitol Hill on Bread's policy initiatives under the direction of and with the support of the director of GR. Initiate, plan, and help executive external facing events on domestic hunger, such as Hill receptions and issue specific briefings, as well as think outside of the box of other ways to help build true bi-partisan support on Hunger issues. Work collaboratively with OFE, PRI, and other teams at Bread to promote their work and represent the Government Relations team. Communication Represent Bread externally with assigned media work, at public events, and via other forums. Contribute content to web, social media, print, and other distribution channels as needed. Work collaboratively with Communications, OFE, and PRI teams to drive impact and desired outcomes. Complete other duties as necessary or assigned.SUPERVISION EXERCISED
Supervises Domestic Policy Analyst, and occasionally, government relations fellows or interns.SKILLS/KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED
At least six years of experience on Capitol Hill, a federal agency, or similar Government Relations work experience. Experience with key domestic policy issues pertaining to hunger, nutrition, agriculture, taxes, and healthcare is a plus. Bachelor's degree in public policy or related area or equivalent work experience is required. Ability to make decisions using sound judgment. Public facing, ability to speak in front of crowds, and event planning experience. Make-it-happen spirit and collaborative and inclusive team style. Comfort level with engaging with high-level professionals and senior government officials. Ability to balance demands of multiple priorities. Organizational and political savvy and discernment related to confidentiality and cultural sensitivity. The highest ethical, professional, and personal standards and values. Strong understanding of the budget,appropriations,and authorization processesin Congress. Strong analytical skills and attention to detail, including ability to conduct research and in-depth analysis of complex factors related to Bread's issues and to make data-driven recommendations and decisions. Ability to identify and engage target audiences and communicate complex ideas or issues tailored to the audience, using appropriate formats and media.WORK ENVIRONMENT ISSUES
Attendance at various lobby visits on the Hill and other meetings in Washington, DC will frequently be required. Work will require some evening and weekend hours to ensure organizational responsiveness to assigned issues area. Bread is a hybrid organization. This position is based in Washington, D.C.
