The Center for China Analysis (CCA) is part of the Asia Society Policy Institute, a think- and do- tank with a policy-solving mandate that tackles major policy challenges confronting the Asia-Pacific in security and diplomacy; trade, investment, and innovation; climate and energy; and society, technology, and public health. Established in 2022, CCA is committed to decoding China's complexities with an "inside-out" approach by offering evidence-based, independent, and policy-relevant analyses with a balanced, holistic, and human-centered focus, covering Chinese domestic politics; economy and technology; foreign policy and national security; climate, energy and the environment; society, public health, and education.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Essential functions may include, but are not limited to the following:
  • Tracking, synthesizing, and producing forward-looking analysis on:
  • major trends in China's tech development, including AI, semiconductors, biotechnology, and broader innovation policy;
  • China's evolving policy toolkit and sources of leverage, including data governance, rare earth export controls, and industrial policy;
  • macroeconomic developments;
  • bureaucratic incentive reforms, local policy initiatives, and their traction;
  • policy toward the corporate sector, including private firms, multinationals, and SOEs.
  • Assisting in organizing roundtables and other events, including preparing agendas and drafting post-event readouts;
  • Drafting and proofreading social media communications for the pillar's outputs, including but not limited to newsletters, podcasts, videos, and research papers.
  • Supporting research activities, including data analysis, data visualization, fact-checking, proofreading, and related tasks;
  • Collaborating on short- and long-term projects with other branches and divisions within or outside CCA;
  • Performing additional administrative and research-related duties as assigned.
REQUIREMENTS
  • Candidates are expected to commit to a minimum of 18 hours per week for a period of at least 12 weeks;
  • Current graduate student or advanced undergraduate, preferably with a focus on economics, emerging technology, Chinese studies, or related fields;
  • Prior experience with quantitative analysis is preferred but not required;
  • Native or near-native fluency in both English and Chinese, with demonstrated excellence in translation, writing, and editing;
  • Strong interest in China's economic and technological policies, as well as its contemporary political landscape;
  • Proven ability to work independently, manage multiple tasks, and meet deadlines;
  • Strong research and analytical skills, with proficiency in locating, assessing, and synthesizing policy information;
  • Exceptional attention to detail, organizational capabilities, and critical thinking;
  • Must be based in the United States and legally authorized to work (international students are encouraged to apply).
