Job Description

The Dane County Board Office has a limited term vacancy for an LTE Intern in the Policy, Outreach and Communications division in Madison, WI. Limited Term Employees (LTEs) are limited to 1,200 hours in a payroll year and are not guaranteed any hours per week.

DEFINITION
The Office of the Dane County Board of Supervisors is providing an internship opportunity to students interested in communications, outreach, policy analysis, and policy research.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
This position will complete tasks in support of the work of the Dane County Board as directed by Dane County Board Office staff. Duties related to policy analysis and research may include: assisting staff with the development of policy initiatives on a variety of topics; conducting research and comparative policy analyses; researching and developing policy, fiscal, and procedural responses to county issue; drafting special matter resolutions and certificates of recognition; interviewing policy stakeholders and experts; developing policy research memos, reports, and/or presentations that may inform the work of the County Board; and creating policy document templates. Duties related to communications and outreach may include: assisting with communications work; drafting and scheduling social media posts; assisting with outreach events and event planning, including coordination of press conferences; assisting with drafting press releases; designing reports/presentations/flyers/handouts; drafting "saw you in the news" letters; creating document templates for communications and outreach; and updating or maintaining databases of contacts (for events and mailings).
Additional duties may include:
attending County Board and committee meetings; drafting summaries of county committee and Dane County Board actions; and other projects as assigned.
Education, Training and Experience :
Any combination of education, training, and/or experience equivalent to one (1) year of college with course work in communications, journalism, business, marketing, public affairs, or public administration; and any combination of training and experience equivalent to six (6) months of clerical experience.
Special Requirements:
Must have a valid driver's license, or access to reliable transportation, or equivalent.
Background Check Statement :
Some positions may require a criminal background check which can include fingerprinting due to the nature of the job's responsibilities. Wisconsin's Fair Employment Law, s. 111.31 - 111.395, Wis. Stats., prohibits discrimination because of an arrest or conviction record. However, Dane County may disqualify an applicant if the position's responsibilities are substantially related to the applicant's criminal history (e.g., the nature of the crime and its relationship to the position, whether hiring, transferring or promoting an applicant would pose an unreasonable risk to the business, its employees, customers and vendors, etc.) Management reserves the right to make employment contingent upon successful completion of the background check.
For Bilingual Positions:
Provide services in both English and the required foreign language (e.g., Spanish, Arabic, Hmong, etc.). Applicants being considered for bilingual positions will be tested during the recruitment process prior to employment. This will primarily consist of passing an oral language proficiency assessment from English to foreign language and foreign language to English, but may require additional language testing, such as written translation, if it is an essential function of the job. •If applicable, individuals may confirm with the Employee Relations Division whether results of bilingual language certifications/ examinations they currently hold qualify them for the position's bilingual designation.
Physical and Environmental Work Requirements :
Ability to see and hear within normal ranges with or without adaptive devices. Ability to use hand, arm, wrist and finger motion. Ability to work for prolonged periods on a computer. Ability to work independently and exercise sound judgment in completing assignments. Ability to take initiative and ownership of work. Ability to adhere to deadlines. Ability to relate effectively to and communicate with the County Board members, county personnel, local government officials, and community members. Effective oral and written communication skills. Must spell correctly and use grammar properly. Ability to operate word processing software packages on a personal computer. Must have ability to accurately draft and complete a variety of letters and reports. Ability to operate standard office equipment. Ability to work independently and as a member of a team.
