Job Description

This role is designed to provide exposure to the Planning Department and Development Department—including while supporting day-to-day tasks and special projects related to planning, zoning, and land development. The ideal candidate is adaptable, motivated, and ready to contribute to a fast-paced, collaborative environment. This internship is a valuable opportunity to build foundational business skills and gain a broad understanding of how zoning, planning, and development work together to drive organizational success.
Data Collection & Research:
Gather demographic, economic, and land use data to support comprehensive city plans.
Mapping & GIS:
Assist in creating spatial data, maps, and graphic visualizations using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) software.
Zoning & Development Review:
Help review site plans, process zoning applications, and audit digital records for compliance with local regulations.
Community Engagement:
Assist planners in conducting public workshops, creating presentation materials, and recording public feedback.
Administrative Support:
Attend Planning Commission or Board of Zoning Adjustment meetings, draft meeting agendas, meeting minutes, and help prepare staff reports.
  • Currently pursuing a degree in Urban and Regional Planning, Urban Studies, or Public Administration
  • Strong communication, organizational, and time-management skills
  • Ability to adapt quickly and work collaboratively in a team environment
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Willingness to learn and take on new challenges
KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION
Skill in use of desktop computers and Microsoft Office products. Skill in prioritizing and planning. GIS mapping and analysis Skill in interpersonal relations. Skill in oral and written communication.
SUPERVISORY CONTROLS
The department director assigns work in terms of department goals and objectives and reviews work through conferences, reports, and observation of department activities.

The work consists of varied administrative duties. Strict rules and regulations combined with the variety of activities to be managed contribute to the complexity of the position.

Contacts are typically with other city employees and members of the general public. Contacts are typically to exchange information, motivate persons, negotiate matters, resolve problems, and provide services.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT
The work is typically performed while sitting at a desk or table or while intermittently sitting, standing, or stooping. The work is typically performed in an office, or a designate space to complete job tasks.
