Placement on the salary schedule will be based on qualifications and direct work experience. The Town of Los Gatos is recruiting for a motivated Planning Technician to support the Planning Division with strong communication skills and attention to detail. This role involves collecting and analyzing data, assisting with report preparation, and providing technical support for land use, zoning, and subdivision projects. The normal work week for this position is Monday through Friday, in-person, with occasional extended or irregular hours. Telework schedule is not available. Duties and Responsibilities Essential responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following: Work with professional staff in collecting, analyzing, and evaluating factual data. Extracts planning information from land use maps, aerial photographs, subdivision maps, and other planning records. Investigates zoning and land use changes in the field, gathering factual data to ascertain present use of land and location of structures. Assists in the preparation of planning reports. Computes land areas and other mapping calculations. Prepares maps, charts, tables, photographs, illustrations, and other graphics for display or inclusion in planning reports. Indexes and files maps, plans, and reports and meeting tapes. Prepares and updates computerized mailing lists. Organizes mailings and report distributions. Performs related duties and responsibilities as required. Minimum QualificationsREQUIRED EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING
Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying. Equivalent to at least two years college level education in planning or a related field.REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of:
Current principles and trends in urban planning and zoning. Drafting and mapping techniques. Applicable Town regulations, policies, and programs. General customer service techniques. Safe work practices. Basic principles of report preparation.Ability to:
Accurately interpret and administer applicable codes and regulations. Analyze, research, and investigate issues and to prepare clear and concise reports based on findings. Prepare accurate drawings and maps. Communicate effectively both in writing and orally. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work. Possession of a valid California Class C driver's license. Each of these essential tasks must be performed individually and unassisted by other persons, since this class of employment requires an ability to work alone.DESIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Internship or para-professional experience in city planning.PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Employees must be able to maintain physical condition necessary for sitting, walking, and standing for extended periods of time; some stooping, crawling, crouching, and climbing; maintain concentration and the capability to make sound decisions; maintain effective audio/visual discrimination and perception to the degree necessary for the successful completion of assigned duties.WORK ENVIRONMENT
