The Idaho Transportation Department (ITD) is looking for a Senior Transportation Planner to join our team in Boise, Idaho —a role where your expertise will directly influence how communities grow, connect, and move. This isn't just planning, it's building the roadmap for Idaho's future . As a Senior Transportation Planner, you'll lead long-range planning efforts for state highways, working at the intersection of public infrastructure, private development, and community priorities . You'll collaborate with developers, local agencies, and internal teams to ensure transportation systems are safe, efficient, and built to support Idaho's continued growth. In this role, you'll have the authority and autonomy to make meaningful decisions that shape transportation projects from concept to reality. We're seeking a strategic thinker who can balance technical expertise with collaboration —someone who's comfortable making decisions, working with diverse stakeholders, and navigating complex projects from start to finish.Example of responsibilities:
Drive long-range transportation planning for state highways, aligning projects with statewide and community goals Partner with private developers and local agencies to design solutions that balance growth with infrastructure needs Lead project scoping and development , making key decisions on roadway design, geometrics, drainage, pedestrian access, and safety features Evaluate transportation systems and future needs , using data and forecasting to guide smart investments Negotiate and develop mitigation plans tied to private development impacts Identify and secure innovative funding opportunities , including public-private partnerships Serve as a key decision-maker and problem solver , resolving conflicts and guiding projects forward Influence policy and planning , reviewing legislation, ordinances, and transportation plans Prepare and present materials for department leadership and board meetingsMinimum Qualifications:
Considerable knowledge of: Principles and methods of transportation planning and forecasting techniques Good knowledge of: Concepts associated with transportation planning including identifying and evaluating economic, social, and land-use impacts related to transportation development and system adjustments Federal, state, and local government structures Data processing systems capabilities for forecasting and analytical purposesExperience:
