Capacity Manager The Capacity Manager is responsible for securing transportation capacity and optimizing carrier relationships to support the successful execution of brokerage freight. This role serves as the primary liaison between PSA BDP Surface brokerage operations and the carrier community, focusing on spot-market procurement, carrier negotiations, load-board management, carrier development, and transportation cost control. The ideal candidate is highly competitive, relationship-driven, and thrives in a fast-paced brokerage environment. This individual will continuously build and expand a carrier network while ensuring service, cost, and capacity objectives are achieved across truckload, LTL, drayage, and other transportation modes. Key Responsibilities Carrier Procurement & Capacity Management Source and secure transportation capacity for brokerage shipments across multiple transportation modes. Negotiate rates and service commitments with carriers on spot market and transactional freight. Manage daily capacity requirements to ensure customer freight is covered efficiently and profitably. Develop creative solutions for challenging freight, capacity shortages, and service-sensitive shipments. Balance carrier cost, service, and reliability when making carrier selection decisions. Ensure SOPs and routing requirements are created and followed. Carrier Relationship Management Build and maintain strategic relationships with carrier partners nationwide. Continuously expand PSA BDP Surface's carrier network. Conduct regular outreach to carriers to understand capacity trends, market conditions, and lane preferences. Serve as the primary point of contact for carrier-related escalations and operational concerns. Promote carrier engagement and increase carrier utilization within the brokerage network. Spot Market Procurement Manage daily spot market activity and carrier sourcing efforts. Solicit and evaluate carrier quotes for customer freight opportunities. Monitor market conditions and identify opportunities to improve margin performance. Execute carrier negotiations to maximize profitability while maintaining service expectations. Develop lane-specific carrier strategies to reduce dependence on spot market procurement over time. Load Board Management Post, manage, and optimize freight opportunities across industry load boards. Evaluate inbound carrier opportunities and ensure carrier compliance requirements are met. Utilize market intelligence tools and load board analytics to improve carrier sourcing effectiveness. Monitor load board performance and identify opportunities to increase coverage efficiency. Carrier Compliance & Risk Management Verify carrier qualifications, safety ratings, insurance coverage, and operating authority. Leverage internal carrier vetting and onboarding tools to ensure carrier records remain current and carriers are on-boarded correctly. Support fraud prevention initiatives and carrier vetting processes. Maintain adherence to company and regulatory transportation requirements. Market Intelligence & Analytics Monitor transportation market trends, seasonal fluctuations, and capacity conditions. Analyze lane-level pricing and carrier performance data. Provide recommendations to leadership regarding market conditions and procurement strategies. Support customer pricing initiatives through market intelligence and carrier cost insights. Identify opportunities to improve procurement efficiency and carrier performance. Cross-Functional Collaboration Work closely with Brokerage Account Management, Procurement, and Leadership teams. Participate in customer onboarding and implementation activities as needed. Assist in developing transportation solutions for new business opportunities. Support service recovery efforts during operational disruptions. Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives across the brokerage organization. Exemption Type Non-Exempt (Hourly) Job Requirements Required Qualifications 1-3 years of transportation brokerage, carrier sales, carrier procurement, dispatch, or logistics experience. Experience in freight brokerage, carrier sales, or capacity management roles.
Strong understanding of:
Truckload (TL) Less-than-Truckload (LTL) Expedited Transportation Experience negotiating transportation rates and securing carrier capacity. Knowledge of transportation market dynamics and carrier operations. Strong communication, negotiation, and relationship-building skills. Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment. Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and transportation management systems. Preferred Qualifications Existing carrier network and industry relationships. Experience utilizing load boards and transportation market intelligence platforms. Knowledge of carrier compliance, onboarding, and risk management processes. Experience working within a growth-oriented brokerage environment. Familiarity with transportation analytics and margin management.
