Job Description

Position Objective:
The role of the Planning Intern is to work closely with the public on a regular basis to provide customer service on planning issues.
Essential Functions:
Reviews building permits and zoning permit applications to assure compliance with zoning ordinance requirements. Prepares narrative staff reports and recommendations of limited complexity, such as conditional use permits. Provides technical assistance and information to staff and the public in the administration of specific planning program areas or ordinances. Perform related duties as assigned by supervisor. Experience Required:
Associate's degree or one year of progressively responsible experience. Experience in planning, geographical information systems, geography, surveying, or other related fields is preferred. Equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered. Possession of a valid driver's license.
Physical Requirements:
Ability to safely and successfully perform the essential job functions consistent with the ADA, FMLA, and other federal, state and local standards, including meeting qualitative and quantitative productivity standards. Ability to maintain regular, punctual attendance consistent with the ADA, FMLA, and other federal, state and local standards. This position frequently remains stationary for long periods of time and needs to occasionally move about inside the office to access file cabinets, office machinery, etc. Constantly operates a computer and other office productivity machinery such as a calculator, copy machine and printer. Must be able to move up to 20 pounds unassisted, and move 40 pounds with assistance.
Working Environment:
Work is performed mostly indoors in an office where noise and interruptions often occur. Occasional outdoor work will be required where the employee is exposed to weather conditions. Overtime hours may be required to meet project deadlines. Some travel may be required for training and meetings. Safe use of mobile devices in the field is required. Occasionally work in hazardous locations.
