Job Description

Under general supervision of the Comprehensive Planning Manager or their designated appointee(s), the Development Services Intern assists Development Services Department staff with special projects pertaining to short-range and long-range urban planning, including, but not limited to: research and development of unified development code amendments, comprehensive plan implementation, development review proposals, community engagement, public meeting preparation, and limited geographic information systems (GIS) mapping. The position provides exposure to municipal urban planning operations, site development review and comprehensive planning workflows, and public policy research and formation. Assist with the Advance Addison 2050 comprehensive plan (AA2050) implementation actions, including research, drafting and preparation of illustrative materials. Participate in development review committee (DRC) and provide feedback on unified development code (UDC) and AA2050 requirements for select development proposals. Support ongoing planning efforts and project documentation, such as research and development of clarifying language to amend the UDC. Collaborate as needed with staff, agency partners, peer cities, and community stakeholders on engagement efforts and planning initiatives. Attend project site visits, internal meetings, and public meetings as needed. Assist with general administrative tasks including data entry, file organization, and preparation of presentation materials. May be asked to perform related duties not directly associated with core responsibilities to support Development and Neighborhood Services Department operations. Perform related duties as required or assigned.
Education and Experience :
High school graduate or GED equivalent; AND Currently enrolled in an accredited bachelor's or master's degree in urban planning / a related field, OR Anequivalentcombinationofeducation,training,and experience.
Conditions of Employment :
Valid Texas Driver's License; safe driving record. Clear Criminal Background check and pre-employment drug screen.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities :
Strong interest in public policy, urban planning and design, and municipal planning processes. Ability to maintain detailed and organized records and manage multiple project tasks. Ability to think innovatively with a solutions-oriented approach to departmental initiatives. Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, with tact and professionalism. Ability to work collaboratively with staff, agency partners, peer cities, and community members. Ability to prepare regulatory research summaries, reports and design documentation. Ability to reliably utilize Microsoft Office products (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Forms, SharePoint, Teams), Community Engagement products (Slido, Canva), and has familiarity with ArcGISPro and Adobe InDesign.
PHYSICAL AND WORK ENVIRONMENT
Work is performed in a standard office environment. Work is generally performed indoors in an air-conditioned facility but may also include limited exposure to outside weather conditions. This part time, non-benefited position typically works 20-25 hours per week, Monday-Friday. Hours may vary based on department needs.
