Job Description
Are you passionate about helping property owners and applicants navigate local zoning regulations to help build a diverse, growing, and vibrant community? Prince William County Development Services is seeking a Planner, who is a highly motivated team player with strong zoning skills, project management experience and excellent judgement. This is a position in the Zoning Administration Division, which recertifies nonconforming uses, reviews variance requests and appeals of zoning violations, and writes zoning verifications, determinations, and interpretations. This position will, on occasion, make presentations to Prince William County's Board of Zoning Appeals.
About This Role:
This position works under general supervision and exercises a high level of discretion and independent judgment in performing the full range of routine to complex responsibilities spanning the entire spectrum of the zoning division work programs. You will work as a member of a tightly functioning 6-person Zoning Administration Team led by Prince William County's Zoning Administrator. This position requires excellent research, communication, organizational, and analytical skills. Routine tasks in this role include: Review nonconforming use applications (including Lots, Structures, and Uses). Research and assist the public and other agencies on general zoning regulation questions. Detailed communication with applicants and other internal agencies. Review variance & appeal applications and prepare staff reports for the Board of Zoning Appeals. Production of staff reports, zoning verification letters, and zoning/proffer determinations. Compliance with time-sensitive deadlines.Minimum Requirements:
High school diploma or G.E.D. and 5 years of related experience and/or education related to professional planning - land use review experience.Preferences:
Degree in Planning, Urban Design, or related field from an accredited college. Experience related to professional planning (experience interpreting/administering current planning regulations, and/or project management for large projects). Knowledge of the principles, practices, and terminology of urban planning, including land use analysis, zoning, demographic, and geographic analysis. Ability to research, interpret, and apply laws, regulations, and policies related to land use and planning. Proficiency in collecting, analyzing, and presenting complex planning data. Ability to prepare and deliver clear, concise, and well-organized written reports and presentations. Ability to manage multiple projects, prioritize tasks, and meet deadlines. Skill in using GIS software, Microsoft Office Suite, and other planning-related applications. Ability to work cooperatively and tactfully with elected officials, staff, developers, and the public. Strong interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to resolve conflicts and provide excellent customer service.Work Schedule:
This position works a standard Monday-Friday schedule, working 37.5 hours per week. This telework-eligible position may revert to in-office scheduling if business needs change. This position may telework 1-2 days per week after an initial 6-month probationary period.Special Requirements:
Valid Driver's License - successful completion of a DMV Check.
