Job Description

Overview of Position:
The primary responsibility of the School Counselor is to monitor and support the health and well-being of Kirby's student population. They work closely with the Upper and Middle School Division Heads to address student conduct, behavioral concerns, and discipline. As a School Counselor, they create a safe space for students, provide therapy sessions, and respond to students in crisis. The School Counselor follows guidelines to ensure student confidentiality and maintains clinical records in accordance with the law. Reports to the Head of School.
Key Responsibilities:
Provide therapy sessions for students in crisis, as referred by teachers, students, parents, administrators, or self-referred Provide short-term ongoing therapy when needed (less than twelve weeks) Provide referrals to parents when external therapy is recommended Periodically check in with outside therapists who are seeing Kirby students to monitor well-being Meet with parents and teachers to provide support around student and school issues Pre-licensure candidates will meet weekly with outside licensed supervisors for consultation and continuing education Follow standard practices of confidentiality guidelines as prescribed by the BBS while working with minors Maintain confidential student files and records for seven years Other duties as assigned by the Head of School As a maternity position backfill for our School Psychologist, you will be responsible for the additional tasks below: Help coordinate accommodations for SAT, ACT, BYU and file applications for accommodations with the College Board Facilitate accommodations for students with testing needs Coordinate tutors and room schedules, vetting new tutors as necessary Consult with teachers and administrators regarding specific students Licensing hours may not be available for this portion of your work. Supervision is covered by salary
Qualifications:
AMFT, ACSW, or APCC registration required, LMFT, LCSW, or LPCC licensing as regulated by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences preferred At least 1 year of counseling experience Enthusiasm for working collaboratively in an academic atmosphere A passion for working with youth and guiding them to lead Understanding of the need for collaborative partnership with administrative leadership Excellent organizational skills; ability to prioritize tasks by volume, urgency, etc Detail-oriented, resourceful, strong work ethic, high level of integrity, tactful Technologically capable
Desired:
Bilingual competency (Spanish preferred) Job type: Full-time, In-Person Time frame: Beginning August 3rd, 2026 for a six-month contract with potential extension
