JOB GOAL

High school counselors are educators uniquely trained in child and adolescent development, learning strategies, self-management, and social skills who understand and promote success for today's diverse students. They implement a school counseling framework to support students through this important developmental period (ASCA, 2019).

Roles & Responsibilities:

Direct Services Implement a comprehensive, developmentally appropriate school counseling curriculum that supports the social-emotional learning for all students. Participate in student support teams, Section 504 and PPT meetings, as appropriate. Participate in and/or lead informational meetings for families on transitions, program development/course selection as appropriate, and other topics related to student needs at this level. Lead individual and group informational sessions for students on topics related to school counseling curriculum. Provide individual assistance to students regarding their unique academic, career and social emotional needs. Provide short-term individual counseling to help students develop coping skills for personal, social and academic concerns. Provide post-secondary counseling and resources to all students by assisting them in navigating the college application process and/or career exploration. Proactively provide parent/guardian school-related resources and programming opportunities related to academic, career and social-emotional needs. Participate in and/or lead informational meetings for families on transitions, program development/course selection as appropriate, and other topics related to student needs at this level Review and evaluate course grades, credits earned and transcripts with students, guiding them to meet graduation requirements. Assist transfer students and families with course registration and transition to the high school. Indirect Services Use school counseling research based standards and competencies to inform the implementation of a comprehensive school counseling framework. Develop and implement action plans aligned with annual student outcome goals and student data. Review the comprehensive school counseling program annually, revising it as needed and planning yearly/monthly calendars of counseling program activities as well as conducting annual needs assessment. Collaborate with parents/guardians, school staff and other supporting agencies on identification of students' academic & social emotional needs and implementation of appropriate interventions.

Take a leadership role in the infusion of counseling content into the curriculum. Collaborate with middle school staff to assist students in making a successful transition to high school; provide an overview of the high school program including course registration and orientation activities for incoming students and parents/guardians. Work collaboratively with school psychologists, social workers, school nurses and other agencies to provide multi-tiered systems of support to students & families. Make referrals, in consultation and collaboration with mental health staff, to appropriate school and community resources. Proactively cultivate a safe, welcoming and inclusive school counseling environment that fosters student wellness and academic success.
