$70,800 to $125,942 annually based on degree and experience
Department :
Upper School Counseling Reports to : Director of Upper School Counseling Founded in 1863 by Queen Emma and King Kamehameha IV, 'Iolani School is an Episcopal day and boarding school in Honolulu, Hawai?i enrolling approximately 2,200 students on its K-12, 25-acre urban campus. Through a rigorous and innovative curriculum, we emphasize academic excellence, moral leadership, and service to others in its commitment to developing young people of character and integrity.
Job Summary :
We seek an experienced Upper School Counselor for grades 7 and 8 to join our dynamic and collaborative Upper School counseling team for the 2026-27 academic year. The role requires ongoing collaboration with students, families, teachers, and administrators.
Essential Responsibilities :
Provide personal, social, and academic counseling and guidance to students. Coordinate all activity and communication involved in providing students support, such as meetings with students, families, teachers, and administrators when a student is experiencing an academic or personal challenge. Oversee the academic scheduling process for students. Help students identify their challenges in the learning process, defining their learning style preferences, and assisting them in implementing strategies and in developing self-advocacy skills. Teach a guidance course or structured study hall. Work with students in small group sessions. Provide guidance with organizational and study skills inclusive of note-taking and study strategies. Ensure that all students experience a strong sense of belonging and are empowered to thrive during their time at 'Iolani School. Collaborate with the Director of Social and Emotional Health regarding student mental health and well-being. Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications :
Master's degree in Secondary School Counseling or related field. Minimum three years of experience working with students in grades 7-12. Knowledge of contemporary theories of learning, personality, and counseling. Possess significant knowledge of learning differences and intervention strategies. Ability to serve a diverse population. Communicate effectively in a variety of settings. Exercise good judgment. Demonstrated commitment to student support.
Working Conditions and Physical Requirements :
Ability to see and hear within normal parameters with or without correction. Full range of head, neck, and back movement; unrestricted ability to bend knees, raise arms above the head, and to move hands, fingers, and wrists. Ability to lift and carry up to 20 pounds without difficulty. Ability to sit, stand, and/or walk for sustained periods of time. Work is generally performed Monday through Friday during normal business hours. Must successfully pass fingerprint background check and provide TB clearance due to working in proximity to children.
