4.14 High School Professional School Counselor Position Summary The position of High School Professional School Counselor was established to support the process of serving as a professional with specific responsibilities for the social/emotional, academic, and career development of students; supervising students within the classroom and other assigned areas: collaborating with teachers, other professional staff, and administrators, parents, community members, and others in addressing student issues; and responding to a wide range of inquiries from students, their parents or guardians and colleagues regarding instructional program and student progress.Job Title:

Five or more years counseling experience or an equivalent, preferred. Experience working in a school setting, preferred. Excellent written and oral communication. Exemplary organizational skill and ability to carry through multiple tasks in meeting deadlines.Education :

Essential Functions Program Development and Implementation Delivers a comprehensive professional school counseling program for the purpose of improving student social/emotional, academic, and career development. Collaborates with the building leadership team to research, select, implement, and evaluate professional school counseling strategies focused on improvement of student social/emotional, academic, and career needs. Assists with all aspects of the school improvement process related to the high school professional school counselor program. Administers programs, assessments, and inventories for the purpose of making informed decisions and guidance to support students' growth and success. Student Assessment and Support Assesses student social/emotional, academic, and career needs and/or goals to provide feedback to students, parents, and administration and inform next steps for future readiness. Manages student behavior for the purpose of providing a safe and optimal learning environment. Monitors students in a variety of educational environments (e.g., classroom, school campus, school assemblies, and events) to provide a safe and positive learning environment. Collaboration and Consultation Collaborates with instructional staff, other school personnel, parents, and community resources to improve the quality of the professional school counseling program and support the school improvement plan. Supports classroom teachers in implementing strategies that address student social/emotional, academic, and career needs and/or goals. Participates in meetings (e.g., parent-teacher conferences, PLCs, IEPs, 504 meetings) to convey and/or gather information related to student needs and goals. Responds to inquiries from teachers, parents, administrators, and others to resolve issues and provide information or direction. Family and Stakeholder Engagement Advises parents and/or legal guardians of student social/emotional, academic, and career needs and/or goals to communicate expectations, student achievements, and strategies for improvement or reinforcement at home. Professional Development and Staff Support Researches, identifies, develops, and/or offers social/emotional, academic, and career professional development opportunities for staff. Documentation, Reporting, and Compliance Prepares written materials to document student progress and meet mandated requirements. Reports incidents (e.g., behavior infractions, suspected child abuse, suspected substance abuse) to maintain student safety, ensure a positive learning environment, and comply with laws and school board policies. Maintains accurate records. Other Functions Participate in staff development training programs, faculty meetings, and special events as assigned. Provide excellent customer service and assistance to all employees, fostering a welcoming and approachable atmosphere. Work efficiently and independently with minimal supervision. Demonstrate respect and professionalism in all interactions with colleagues, students, and families. Use positive and professional communication in all interactions. Adhere to safety protocols and policies established by the Ankeny Community School District to ensure the safety of oneself and others. Support District goals and objectives while adhering to all District policies, contributing to the overall success of the school community. The usual and customary methods of performing the position functions require the following physical demands: lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, climbing, reaching, driving, standing and walking. Working conditions may include extreme temperatures and humidity. Hazards may include exposure to communicable diseases. This position requires one to maintain emotional control under stress.
