189 QUALIFICATIONS Requires the following (or equivalent qualifications): Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, Master of Arts, Master of Science, Ed. D., or Ph. D., degree in an appropriate teaching area Valid State of Iowa Teacher Certification with proper endorsement or ability to obtain temporary certification
POSITION PURPOSE
Help students overcome problems that impede learning and to assist them in adjusting to school life regardless of sex, culture or ethnic background.
PERFORMANCE ACCOUNTABILITIES
Work to resolve students' educational difficulties. Take an active role in interpreting the school's objectives to students, parents and the community at large, especially the guidance and counseling program. Work with the faculty to aid "at-risk students". Work with students on an individual basis or in small groups in the solution of personal problems related to home and family relations, health and emotional adjustment, regardless of sex, culture or ethnic background. Confer with parents whenever necessary. Participate in faculty committees and the sponsorship of student activity groups. Maintain professional competence through in-service activities and in self-selected professional growth activities such as state and area counselor meetings. Serve as a resource person on the matters of student discipline. Arrange for tutors and summer school work. Participate with supporting activities in the classroom in conjunction with regular staff. Is familiar with play therapy and other methods of helping kids. Serve as Drug Free Schools Coordinator. Maintain appropriate records and protects their confidentiality. Act as a liaison between the school and outside agencies that deal with students. Perform other duties as assigned
SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Excellent human relations skills. Has necessary verbal and written communication skills, including ability to make presentations. Excellent organizational, analytical and problem-solving skills. Proven skills such as planning, organizing, and coordinating. Ability to relate positively with students, staff, parents and the public. Ability to effectively monitor, evaluate and develop students. Regular and reliable attendance.
PHYSICAL, MENTAL, AND VISUAL EFFORT
Continuous speaking, hearing, and visual effort. Frequent walking, sitting, standing and reaching. Occasional climbing. High degree of concentration requiring continuous and often intense mental and visual attention. Numerous irregularities, complicated and complex tasks are involved. Must have the ability to lift fifty or more pounds on a repetitive basis. Mobility required.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Work is primarily performed in a classroom or office setting, may include playground supervision and working with students in other settings. Occasionally exposed to dust, noise, odors, and other irritants. Stress associated with work pace and pressure. Work involves regular hours and days as set forth by the Board approved calendar. Some travel may be required. Exposed to hazards of the road when traveling.
