Highschool Job Overview:
A Guidance Counselor at The Academy of Scholastic Achievement serves as a counselor and mentor to highschool age, at risk youth students. The Guidance Counselor helps students create a mindset that enhances student academic, personal, social and career development. The school guidance counselor provides individual counseling and crisis intervention to students as needed. The Guidance Counselor helps identify and manage a host of support services for students and family (when applicable). The Guidance Counselor collaborates with teachers, administrators, community services and professional organizations.
Major duties and responsibilities:
Guidance Curriculum
  • Works with the Assistant Principal to develop and implement the school guidance framework
  • Implements developmentally appropriate and prevention-oriented group activities to meet student needs and school goals
  • Conducts group activities based on the guidance framework (college fairs, job fairs, etc.)
  • Assists administration with administering and interpreting state and standardized tests Individual Student Planning
  • In conjunction with the Assistant Principal, Instructional Lead and the counseling department, assists students in developing academic, career and personal/social skills, goals and plans
  • Collaborates with teachers to facilitate the integration of the guidance curriculum into the educational plans
  • Collaborates with parents and guardians to help students with educational and career planning
  • Sends written communications to parents as needed
  • Calls parents/guardians as needed Preventive and Responsive Services
  • Provides individual and group counseling to students on various issues including: poor performance, advocacy, mediation of teacher-student differences, personal problems (family issues, abuse, pregnancy, depression, substance abuse, relationships, peer pressure, etc.)
  • Consults and collaborates with parents/guardians, teachers and administrators regarding students with identified needs or concerns
  • Refers students to appropriate counseling resources in a timely manner, follows up as appropriate
  • Responds to crisis situations in an efficient and timely manner
  • Conducts and facilitates conferences and in-service programs
  • Maintains accurate and appropriate records to document student progress, referrals, etc. System Supports
  • Refers students and parents to community agencies, programs or specialists as appropriate
  • Consults and coordinates with community social service agencies and serves as a school liaison to these organizations
  • Fosters links between students and colleges
  • Attends professional conferences, workshops, etc.

Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree and Master's Degree required
  • Knowledge of legal and ethical practices and state counseling guidelines
  • Comprehensive and demonstrated knowledge of: High school curriculum Child growth, development and cognitive theory Human relations and communications
  • Demonstrated experience working with underserved and at-risk students
  • Previous experience as a guidance counselor or social worker
  • Demonstrated problem-solving, decision-making and conflict-resolution skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Outlook, Excel and PowerPoint)
