Job Summary:
A School Counselor plays a critical role in supporting students' academic success by providing guidance, advising, and resources to help them achieve their educational goals. They collaborate with teachers, administrators, and families to develop academic plans, monitor student progress, and implement interventions that enhance learning outcomes. Responsibilities include academic advising, course selection, college and career readiness planning, and supporting students through the Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS). School Counselors also assist with standardized testing, scholarship opportunities, and post-secondary planning while ensuring students have access to the resources needed for academic achievement. Additionally, they contribute to the development of Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) and 504 plans, advocate for students' academic needs, and help create a school environment that fosters academic growth and success.
Qualifications:
Professional Educator License (PEL) or eligible for an appropriate license School Counseling Endorsement Bilingual preferred

This job's performance will be evaluated per provisions of the Board's policy on the Evaluation of Staff. Reports to:
Building Principal Terms of Employment:
This is a 200-day position, and the salary and benefits are established by the Board of Education. The position retains the Harvard Education Association membership and is part of the Collective Bargaining Unit.

Duties and Responsibilities:
Provides Academic Counseling & Support, assisting students with academic planning, course selection, and goal setting. Monitors student progress and implements interventions to support academic success. Provides guidance on study skills, time management, and organization strategies. Supports students in developing Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) and 504 plans in collaboration with teachers and special education staff. Facilitates College & Career Readiness, guiding students through the college application and career exploration process. Provides information on post-secondary education options, scholarships, and financial aid. Organizes college fairs, career workshops, and guest speaker events. Assist students in developing resumes, personal statements, and interview skills. Provides individual and group counseling to address personal, social, and emotional challenges. Implements social-emotional learning (SEL) programs to promote student well-being. Provides crisis intervention and conflict resolution support as needed. Collaborates with teachers, parents, and mental health professionals to support students' emotional and behavioral needs. Advocates for students' academic and personal needs within the school setting. Communicates with parents and guardians about student progress, concerns, and available resources. Connects families with community services and support networks. Participates in MTSS meetings to develop academic and behavioral interventions for students. Works with teachers and administrators to implement school-wide initiatives that enhance student achievement. Analyzes student data to identify trends and develop strategies for school improvement. Assists in coordinating standardized testing, including state assessments and college entrance exams. Interprets test results and uses data to guide academic planning and interventions. Stays current on best practices in school counseling, academic advising, and mental health support. Adheres to ethical and legal guidelines in student counseling and confidentiality. Participates in professional development opportunities and school counseling networks. Serves on school committees and advisory boards as needed. Supports student transition programs between grade levels and post-secondary planning. Performs other duties as assigned by the principal or district leadership.

Physical Demands:
The physical demands of this position include frequent sitting and standing for extended periods. Repetitive bending at the waist and kneeling, stooping, and crouching to assist students are also required. Regularly walk, talk, hear, operate a computer, hand-held learning devices, and other office equipment, reach with hands and arms, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds.
