JOB EXPECTATIONS & REQUIREMENTS
Position Purpose / Description School counselors develop a comprehensive school counseling program to proactively meet students' needs based on the school's academic, attendance, and behavioral data. School counselors work collaboratively to review data and develop programming that addresses students' academic development, college and career readiness, and social emotional development. School counselors must balance delivery methods (virtual classroom lessons, small groups, individual virtual sessions, consultation with other professionals, and referrals) in order to carry out their program. School counselors' goals include improvement in academic, attendance, and behavioral outcomes related to academic achievement, college and career readiness, and social emotional development. Within the virtual program, the counselor plays a critical role in supporting students' success in a blended learning environment that includes synchronous instruction and asynchronous coursework. The Washington Township Schools Online Academy School Counselor supports students in navigating online learning platforms, monitoring engagement and credit attainment, and developing the time management and self-regulation skills necessary for success in a virtual learning environment. Candidates will display natural leadership qualities, the ability to design systems to support student engagement and progress in a virtual environment, and a desire to ensure equitable educational outcomes for students. The Virtual High School Counselor is directly responsible to the Principal. Essential Functions Uses student, school, and district data to identify achievement, attendance, engagement, and behavioral challenges to be addressed proactively through the comprehensive school counseling program. Monitors student engagement and progress in the virtual learning environment, including participation in synchronous classes, completion of asynchronous coursework, communication with teachers, and credit attainment. Establishes, monitors, and reviews student four-year plans and high school diploma progress in collaboration with students and families through assisting in the course selection process with the goal of 100% graduation rate. Conducts regular progress monitoring meetings with students, including quarterly reviews to evaluate academic progress, credit completion, and engagement in the virtual program. Identifies student competencies to be addressed, creates lesson plans, determines to whom these lessons should target, how lessons/small groups will be delivered virtually, and how data will be evaluated to determine impact on student outcomes. Ensures equitable access to opportunities and rigorous curriculum for all students within the virtual program. Engages students in career exploration activities and postsecondary planning. Provides short-term, goal-focused counseling in small group and individual virtual settings. Provides Tier 1, Tier 2, and Tier 3 support for students on topics such as time management, self-regulation, digital learning habits, bullying prevention, conflict resolution, and other social emotional curriculum to support students. Collaborates with teachers providing synchronous instruction and asynchronous coursework to monitor student participation and address barriers to learning. Collaborates with school social workers and other staff to support students and families in accessing programs offered in the community that support students' academic achievement, college and career readiness, and social emotional development. Maintains familiarity with community resources and refers students and their parents/caregivers to appropriate services. Assists in planning and facilitating virtual program orientation for new students, including training related to technology use, learning platforms, time management, and program expectations such as participation in synchronous classes, independent coursework, and required assessments. Ensures a smooth transition and adequate support for the student and family in the case that a student transitions back to in-person learning. Supports program initiatives designed to increase student engagement and success in the virtual environment, including enhanced check-ins during the first six weeks of enrollment and mentorship opportunities pairing experienced virtual students with new students. Collaborates with administrators and other staff members to ascertain students' abilities and needs, including students with special needs, in order to best support them within the virtual program. Increases school-to-family connections and outreach through regular virtual communication, progress monitoring, and participation in parent/guardian training sessions designed to support virtual learners. Assists with standardized testing. Continues to acquire professional knowledge and learn of current developments in the educational field and virtual learning environments by attending seminars, workshops, or professional meetings, and by maintaining professional relationships with members of professional organizations, institutions of higher learning, and the business community. Organizes and maintains a system for accurate and complete record-keeping as required by district procedures and applicable laws. Serves on relevant school or district committees related to student support, virtual program implementation, or school improvement as appropriate. Collaborates with True North Academy leadership team to provide supplemental support to True North Academy students. Other duties as assigned. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Knowledge of the American School Counseling Association (ASCA) comprehensive school counseling model and the RAMP (Recognized American School Counseling Model Program) process. Knowledge of social emotional learning frameworks, including CASEL competencies. Knowledge of current developments in college and career readiness standards and approaches. Knowledge of graduation requirements and diploma types as established by the Indiana Department of Education. Knowledge of best practices for supporting student engagement and success in virtual and blended learning environments. Knowledge of differentiated instruction and support strategies based upon student learning styles and online learning needs. Knowledge of data information systems, data analysis, and the formulation of action plans. Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws regarding education and students. Advanced counseling skills that lead to positive outcomes in the academic, college and career readiness, and social emotional domains. Ability to analyze educational and engagement data to support student progress in a virtual learning environment. Ability to effectively utilize learning management systems (such as Canvas), digital curriculum platforms, and communication tools to support student learning. Ability to organize and coordinate work and meet deadlines. Ability to communicate effectively with students and parents using virtual communication platforms. Ability to engage in self-evaluation with regard to performance and professional growth. Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with students, families, and staff in both virtual and in-person contexts. Ability to think creatively and develop systems that promote student engagement, accountability, and success in a virtual program.
