IDEAL CANDIDATE
The ideal candidate should: Be energetic, motivated individual to work with collaboratively with the grade level team members. Have a strong background in creating environments that support ALL students Be passionate and enthusiastic educator who can motivate students to discover their creative potential.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Candidate should meet with all assigned students in grades 9 through 12 a minimum of, at least, once each year to develop and review long and short term academic plans, course planning, and college and career planning
  • Candidate should meet with juniors and seniors on an ongoing basis to help with college planning and the application process
  • Candidate should meet, as needed, with students who are experiencing academic, behavioral, emotional, and social issues which are impacting upon academic progress in the school setting
  • Candidate will need to exercise crisis intervention skills and techniques for students who are at-risk or potentially at-risk, and refer such students to the school social worker
  • Candidate will need to work closely and consult regularly with the special education department, school nurse, school social worker, school administration, parents, the community, outside human service professionals and agencies, as well as fellow guidance department colleagues
  • Candidate will need to participate in the student course registration process each spring and meet with students to resolve scheduling conflicts.
  • Candidate will periodically review the report cards and progress reports of all assigned students and meet with those who are not performing adequately and recommend plans for improvement
  • Candidate will facilitate group counseling sessions, when possible
  • Candidate will be available to attend and participate in parent information evenings such as college planning, financial aid, transition between grades 8 and 9.
  • Candidate will be able to conduct group workshops in such areas as the administration and interpretation of vocational interest testing, academic planning, setting priorities, college and career planning and the college admissions process, as well as socio/emotional topics such as anger management, depression, peer pressure, etc.
  • Candidate will schedule parent/teacher conferences when needed
  • Candidate will administer standardized testing on an ongoing basis
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Candidate will preferably have Naviance experience
  • Candidate should be knowledgeable of counseling theories and techniques
  • Candidate should be knowledgeable of theories of childhood, adolescent, and adult development
  • Candidate should be knowledgeable of the dynamics of childhood and adolescent behavior, particularly abnormal social and/or emotional behavior
  • Candidate should be knowledgeable of the different forms of therapeutic treatment, intervention strategies, and referral processes
  • Candidate should have effective individual and group counseling skills
  • Candidate should have strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Candidate should practice ongoing outreach efforts with students, parents, teachers, special educators, administrators, fellow human service and educational professionals, and the greater community
  • Candidate should be proactive and meet with students on an ongoing basis, particularly students who are educationally, behaviorally, socially, ad/or emotionally at-risk and be able to be able to collaborate with fellow professionals to develop and implement corrective strategies and plans
  • Candidate should have a knowledge of the theories of the career development process
  • Candidate should be knowledgeable in the process of college and career planning and the college admissions process, or have a strong interest in learning these processes in a timely and comprehensive manner

Assessment by the Principal
JOB REQUIREMENTS
Three to five years as a special educator, Social worker or BCBA MA DESE certification as a guidance counselor. 5-12, or 8-12 or 9-12 Masters' Degree preferred.
