Aug 31, 2026 Job Description High School Counselor St. Mary's High School - Lynn, Massachusetts Position Summary St. Mary's Lynn, a Catholic college preparatory school rooted in the values of Integrity, Respect, Catholicity, and Excellence, seeks a compassionate, student-centered, and mission-driven School Counselor. The School Counselor promotes the academic, social-emotional, spiritual, and post-secondary success of students through a comprehensive school counseling program aligned with the Massachusetts Model for Comprehensive School Counseling Programs. The counselor serves as an advocate for students while partnering with families, faculty, administrators, and community agencies to support student growth and well-being. Through counseling services, social-emotional learning instruction, college and career planning, and crisis response, the counselor helps students develop the skills necessary to thrive in high school and beyond.
Reports To:
Director of School Counseling Essential Responsibilities Academic Development Provide individual and small-group counseling to support students' academic success and engagement. Assist students with course selection, academic planning, graduation requirements, and goal setting. Monitor student academic progress and collaborate with teachers, families, and administrators to develop intervention plans when needed. Participate in Student Support Team meetings and other collaborative problem-solving processes. Maintain accurate and confidential student records in accordance with school policies and professional standards. Social-Emotional Development Provide short-term individual and group counseling addressing social, emotional, behavioral, and personal concerns that impact student success. Deliver monthly Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) classroom lessons aligned with student developmental needs and school-wide priorities. Develop and implement proactive counseling initiatives that promote student wellness, resilience, belonging, character development, and healthy decision-making. Respond to student crises and coordinate appropriate support services and referrals. Consult with faculty and staff regarding student social-emotional and behavioral needs and recommend effective interventions. College and Career Readiness Implement a comprehensive college and career readiness program for students in grades 9-12. Guide students and families through post-secondary planning, including college exploration, career assessment, application processes, financial aid, scholarships, and career pathways. Coordinate and support college visits, career exploration opportunities, college fairs, and career readiness programming. Assist students in identifying strengths, interests, and goals that align with future educational and career aspirations. Collaborate with faculty and administration to ensure students are prepared for post-secondary success. Family and Community Collaboration Foster strong partnerships with parents and guardians to support student development and achievement. Collaborate with community mental health providers, healthcare professionals, social service organizations, and other agencies to connect students and families with needed resources. Serve as a liaison between the school, families, and outside service providers when appropriate. Promote a culture of communication, respect, and partnership among all stakeholders. Program Management and Professional Responsibilities Uphold professional ethics, confidentiality standards, and mandated reporting responsibilities. Utilize student data to identify trends, assess needs, and inform counseling interventions and programming. Participate in faculty meetings, professional development, and school initiatives. Support and advance the mission and Catholic identity of St. Mary's High School. Perform other duties as assigned by the Head of School, Associate Head of School, or Director of School Counseling. Qualifications Required Bachelor's Degree Demonstrated knowledge of adolescent development and school counseling best practices. Strong interpersonal, communication, organizational, and collaboration skills. Commitment to supporting students within a faith-based educational environment. Preferred Master's Degree in School Counseling, Counseling, Psychology, or a related field. Massachusetts DESE School Counselor License (5-12) or eligibility to obtain licensure. Experience working in a secondary school setting. Experience implementing Social-Emotional Learning programs. Knowledge of college admissions, career planning, and post-secondary counseling. Experience collaborating with community agencies and mental health providers. Familiarity with data-informed counseling practices and the Massachusetts School Counseling Model. Fluent speaker of Spanish and knowledge of other cultures.
