Position Title Disability Support Services Counselor FLSA Non-Exempt FT/PT Part Time Hours Per Week 25 Work Schedule To Be Determined Position Salary Range $30 hourly Summary The Disability Support Services Counselor's function is to assist in ensuring programmatic and physical accessibility for students with disabilities. This position works closely with students to provide academic advising and determine reasonable accommodations based on their disability documentation. The counselor also works closely with faculty and staff in providing these accommodations and ensuring accessibility. Essential Role Responsibilities The counselor must be able to multi-task in a fast pace environment as the DSS Office serves over 700 students with disabilities each semester. The Counselor will have a caseload of students and will work with Credit and Non-Credit students enrolled at HCC who are seeking or already have academic accommodations. Will also support DSS Office at college events and facilitate specialized programming for DSS students. Able to clearly articulate college functions, policies, and procedures to students. Assist students with navigating college processes such as: academic planning, graduation, and transfer planning. Provides on-going quality communication, effective customer service, and support to DSS students by using consistent, effective outreach and follow-up contacts including all forms of communication; documents and tracks outreach and case notes in the accommodations management system. Work cooperatively with all student success staff to ensure a holistic view of the student experience. Minimum Education Required Master's degree Experience Required Master's Degree in Counseling, Education, Social Work or related degree required. Must be knowledgeable with the Americans with Disabilities Act and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act . Experience assessing students' documentation of disability and prescribing accommodations, preferably on the college level. Experience providing advocacy and counseling to persons with disabilities, preferably on the college level. Experience and have a high level of comfort with Microsoft applications including Word, Excel and Access. Knowledge of FERPA and experience with Student Information Systems, preferred. Prior experience in higher education with disability support, advising, or counseling preferred. Broad understanding of academic programs, curriculum, and transfer processes preferred.
Other Requirements:
Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written skills. Should be able to work with various types of technology/systems used to support students. Ability to work with a team. Regular attendance and maintaining a consistent schedule is a requirement of this job. Ability to maintain strict confidentiality.
