Sumner Middle School The Charles M. Sumner Learning Campus is located in Sullivan, Maine. Our campus is located approximately 20 minutes east of Ellsworth, and 45 minutes from Bar Harbor. Our campus houses both Sumner Middle School (approx. 160 students) and Sumner Memorial High School (approx. 200 students). We are seeking a compassionate, organized, and student-centered School Counselor who is passionate about supporting the academic, social-emotional, and postsecondary development of middle school students. The ideal candidate is one with excellent communication skills, establish and maintain a positive rapport with students and work collaboratively with staff. The successful candidate will hold a current Maine Teacher Certification with endorsement #075 School Counselor, and a current Criminal History Records Check. The position begins August 2024. Competitive pay is based on education and teaching experience.

Position Summary The Middle School School Counselor provides a comprehensive school counseling program aligned with the developmental needs of students in grades 6-8. The successful candidate will deliver individual and small-group counseling services, collaborate with staff and families, and serve as a key member of the school's student support team. As a member of a small school community, the counselor will have opportunities to take on leadership roles and collaborate closely with administrators, teachers, the School Social Worker, and other support staff to promote student success and well-being. Responsibilities Develop, implement, and evaluate a comprehensive school counseling program aligned with the needs of middle school students. Provide short-term individual counseling and facilitate small-group counseling focused on topics such as social skills, self-regulation, executive functioning, peer relationships, conflict resolution, attendance, and transitions. Collaborate with the School Social Worker to coordinate services and support for students and families. Work closely with administrators, teachers, and support staff to identify and address academic, social-emotional, and behavioral needs. Serve as an active member of the school's student support, MTSS, PBIS, and BARR teams. Support the implementation of school-wide PBIS initiatives and contribute to a positive school culture. Utilize student data to identify trends, monitor interventions, and inform decision-making. Assist with the development and maintenance of the school master schedule. Coordinate and support transition activities for students moving from grade 5 to grade 6, including orientation events, family communication, and collaboration with sending schools. Support students and families during key middle school transitions, including preparation for high school. Facilitate communication between home and school to ensure students and families have access to necessary resources and supports. Maintain accurate and confidential student records in accordance with FERPA and applicable state regulations. Participate actively in Professional Learning Groups, school improvement initiatives, and leadership opportunities. Preferred Qualifications Familiarity with BARR (Building Assets, Reducing Risks) and PBIS (Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports) frameworks. Experience facilitating small groups and implementing targeted interventions. Experience working within MTSS frameworks and using data to guide interventions. Experience collaborating with community agencies and mental health providers. Experience with student scheduling and transition planning. Why Join Sumner Middle School?
