  • Secondary Primary Purpose To provide culturally responsive academic, emotional, and behavioral support for Native American students, promoting equitable access to education, course completion, and graduation, while fostering a strong sense of identity, belonging, and school engagement.
Qualifications Bachelor's Degree required Experience working with Native American youth and families. Understanding of Native American cultures, values, and tribal systems. Strong interpersonal, advocacy, and communication skills. Background in education, counseling, social work, or related field preferred. Tribal affiliation or community connection is strongly preferred. Ability to work independently and make decisions in accordance with established policies and regulations. Key Responsibilities and Duties General Ensure all Native American students are aware of available academic, social-emotional, cultural, and community resources and understand how to access support when needed. Develop systems to identify students who may be disconnected from school and implement interventions to increase student engagement and belonging. Monitor attendance data for Native American students and collaborate with students, families, counselors, administrators, and community partners to improve attendance and reduce chronic absenteeism. Develop and implement attendance support strategies, including individual attendance plans, family outreach, mentoring, incentives, and referrals to appropriate services. Analyze attendance trends and provide recommendations to school leadership regarding practices and interventions that support improved attendance outcomes for Native American students. Maintain accurate records of student contacts, attendance interventions, and student support activities in accordance with district policies and Title VI requirements. Ensure collection of ED 506
Form:
Indian Student Eligibility Certification Form for Title VI Indian Education Formula Grant Program along with tribal cards or tribal enrollment documentation from students who are American Indian/Alaska Native. Academic Support Monitor academic progress of Native American students and collaborate with teachers to identify students in need of academic interventions. Assist students with goal setting, course planning, and organization skills. Provide tutoring or connect students with tutoring services and academic resources. Advocate for equitable access to advanced coursework, honors, dual enrollment, and CTE programs. Attend and contribute to student support team (SST), IEP, or 504 Plan meetings when applicable. Communicate regularly with families about student progress and opportunities. Behavioral and Emotional Support Provide one-on-one or small group check-ins focused on socio-emotional well-being. Support the development and implementation of individual behavior plans or SEL supports. Collaborate with counselors, school psychologists, and behavior specialists to meet student needs. Help students develop coping skills, conflict resolution strategies, and positive peer relationships. Act as a liaison between home and school to address behavioral concerns in a culturally sensitive manner. Cultural Advocacy and Identity Support Promote cultural identity, belonging, and pride by incorporating Native culture, history, and perspectives into school activities and curriculum where appropriate. Plan and coordinate cultural events, recognition ceremonies, and awareness campaigns (e.g., Native American Heritage Month). Provide cultural context and guidance to school staff to foster a respectful and inclusive school environment. Work with tribal representatives, elders, or liaisons to support student needs. Family and Community Engagement Build strong relationships with families to encourage active involvement in the student's education. Act as a liaison between the school, families, and tribal communities. Attend Title VI Parent Committee meetings to foster strong relationships between stakeholders and the District. Provide resources and referrals for social services, tutoring, mentoring, and college/career planning. Facilitate and participate in parent meetings, home visits, and community events. Conduct proactive outreach to families to strengthen home-school partnerships and support student attendance, engagement, and academic success. Collaborate with families and tribal/community resources to address barriers to attendance and school participation. Facilitate opportunities for Native American students and families to connect with cultural resources, tribal organizations, and community events.
Terms of Employment:
176-day position in accordance with the school calendar includes 1 Day before school with open house. Additional days as directed by the principal. 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. (½ hour duty free lunch) 7.5 hours daily
Wage Rage:
$21.00/hourly to $24.00/hourly. Dependent on degree status.

We offer Advanced Placement courses in four disciplines and numerous opportunities for coursework at Lake Superior State University through Early/Middle College, dual enrollment, and concurrent enrollment programs. Our district is renowned for its professional learning opportunities, individual teacher coaches, and professional learning communities. New teachers receive strong mentorship and guidance, with efforts to qualify them for tuition or loan forgiveness. Sault Area Schools is a leader in computer-aided instruction, with all classrooms equipped with instructional technology. The Career Center integrates technology into many career and technical programs, including business services and drafting and design with industry-standard CAD-CAM software. Students can choose from 13 in-house career-technical programs or additional off-campus specializations. Join us at Sault Ste.
