October 24, 2016 SUMMARY Provides information, support and encouragement to WIC prenatal and breastfeeding women, assisting them in their breastfeeding experience.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The following is a list of essential duties and responsibilities and is not a complete listing of duties that may be assigned, nor does it include all of the knowledge, skills, and abilities that may be necessary to successfully perform this position. Completes required breastfeeding trainings to become a peer counselor. (May involve travel outside Butler County.) Teach breastfeeding classes with approved lesson plan by Breastfeeding Peer Counselor Coordinator. Receives a caseload of WIC participants and makes contacts with participants based on local agency's contact schedule. Counsels pregnant women and breastfeeding mothers by telephone and in the WIC office at scheduled intervals determined by the local WIC provider. Provides information and support for women in managing common maternal and infant breastfeeding problems. Contacts Breastfeeding Peer Counselor Coordinator or agency Lactation expert when a situation occurs that is out of her scope of practice or anytime guidance is needed. Respects each participant by keeping her information strictly confidential. Keeps accurate records of all contacts made with WIC participants. May attend monthly staff meetings and breastfeeding conferences and/or workshops as appropriate. Reads assigned books and material on breastfeeding that are provided by the supervisor. May assist WIC staff in promoting breastfeeding through special projects and duties as assigned. Submit monthly activity reports to the Peer Counselor Program Coordinator. Understands the breast pump loan policy. Issues and returns pumps to/from participants. Ensures pumps are thoroughly cleaned and sanitized as they are returned. Organizes a mother support group on a quarterly basis. Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Preferably has personal breastfeeding experience.
  • Has basic communication skills.
  • Is enthusiastic about breastfeeding, and wants to help other mothers enjoy a positive experience.
  • Comes from a similar background, age group and language.
  • Current or previous WIC participation preferred, but not mandatory.
  • Can work the number of hours required to meet the local agency plan for peer counseling.
  • Has a high school diploma or

None Pay:
$15.00 - $16.00 per hour
