Middle School Counselor (full-time) The Middle School Counselor, under the direction of the administration, and in collaboration with the elementary school counselor and grade level teams, will create a comprehensive school counseling program that: utilizes leadership, advocacy, and collaboration to promote student learning and personal growth; plans and makes decisions based on student needs and learning outcomes; motivates students to become lifelong learners; establishes a positive rapport with every student served; promotes life skills needed to be successful leaders in our global community. Responsibilities include but are not limited to: Collaborating with the elementary school counselor to develop, implement and manage comprehensive school counseling programs. Working with students in individual, small group and classroom settings. Conducting monthly Tier 1 social-emotional learning (SEL) lessons in grades 6-8. Helping students plan for high school and beyond, including providing parents with important information regarding high school deadlines and course registration, and offering transition to high school groups with MCS alumni as facilitators. Consulting, facilitating, and maintaining communication with parents, teachers, administrators, and pertinent agencies/private providers on specific student matters. Leading implementation of school-wide social-emotional learning initiatives and positive school culture programs. Responding appropriately to student crises, conducting threat assessments as needed, and providing crisis intervention and follow-up support as needed. Maintaining accurate and confidential student records in accordance with school policies and legal requirements. Assisting with attendance monitoring and intervention planning for students with excessive absences or ongoing attendance concerns. Assisting the school's Section 504 Coordinator for middle school students; ensuring compliance with Section 504 regulations, timelines, documentation requirements, and procedural safeguards; scheduling, facilitating, and documenting annual 504 review meetings. Providing IEP-required services and other short-term counseling to address social and emotional concerns and appropriately referring students to mental health specialists. Coordinating and facilitating the 8th grade Advisory Student Leadership Team, the weekly character awards, and the student-led character education assemblies. Serving as the McKinney-Vento/Homeless liaison for the school and attending required regional meetings. Collaborating with other educators and administrators to ensure counseling programs meet school goals. Monitoring and recording student progress to ensure counseling programs are effective.
Qualifications and Skills:
Valid school counselor license; minimum of 3 years of school counseling experience; prior middle school experience preferred Strong knowledge of results-based school counseling programs Desire and ability to work with students at the middle school level with diverse backgrounds/abilities toward accomplishing their educational goals Ability to organize tasks and manage time to meet varied deadlines and communicate effectively with students, parents, school administrators and other staff, including the ability to discuss topics which may be sensitive Thorough understanding of barriers to student learning and the use of counseling strategies to eliminate those barriers Knowledge of individual counseling, group counseling and classroom instruction that promotes academic achievement Strong interpersonal and communication skills Magellan applications for employment are located on our website: .
