In this vital role, you will create a safe, nurturing environment where students feel valued, understood, and empowered to succeed while working in close collaboration with teachers, families, and community partners. Key Responsibilities Provide individual and group, solution-focused counseling to support students' behavioral health, mental health, and overall well-being. With the Student Service Team, plan, implement, and evaluate a comprehensive K-8 guidance and counseling program, including direct services, guidance curriculum, and behavior systems supports. Offer crisis counseling and intervention, and coordinate with external agencies when needed to ensure student safety and welfare. Facilitate counseling groups and teach developmental guidance lessons grounded in Responsive Classroom, Positive Discipline, and a Restorative Justice mindset. Help teachers integrate social-emotional learning, team-building, and conflict-resolution strategies into daily Crew meetings and classroom practice. Collaborate with teachers, administrators, and families to identify students needing additional academic, behavioral, or emotional support and design effective interventions. Develop and maintain knowledge of local mental health and community resources and provide referrals for Exploris families as needed. Lead and support out-of-school opportunities such as mentoring, internships, and apprenticeships that connect students and teachers with the broader community. Foster strong, professional relationships with students, staff, families, and community partners, living out the "relationship" core of Exploris's mission. Use data, observations, and assessments to inform interventions and to continuously improve the counseling and guidance program. This includes supporting our Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS), drawing from multiple sources of student and family data to design and provide core and wraparound services. Compile and maintain required records, reports, and documentation in a timely and compliant manner. Qualifications Required (per NC licensure): Master's degree in school counseling from an accredited university. Valid (or eligible for) North Carolina Professional School Counselor license, including successful completion of the Professional School Counselor Praxis exam, or eligibility for provisional licensure under State Board of Education PolicyLICN-001.
Preferred qualities and experience: Demonstrated knowledge and experience in school counseling practices, positive behavior supports, and responsive, restorative approaches. Prior experience working with children or students in educational or counseling settings. Familiarity with child welfare laws, child protective services procedures, and school-based behavioral health programs is a plus. Strong communication skills in written and oral formats, with diverse audiences. Collaborative yet decisive, high-energy, self-starter who is an exceptional problem-solver. Models kindness, empathy, self-control, and cultural humility; committed to culturally responsive, inclusive counseling for students from diverse backgrounds. Adventurous and playful, enjoys the natural world and engaging in games, initiatives, and community-building experiences with staff and students.
