It is responsible for safeguarding and preserving lives and property through prevention, protection, and preparation as well as the care, custody, and supervision of all adults sentenced for violating North Carolina laws. This department includes state prisons with custody, healthcare, and facility operations staff as well as probation/parole officers who supervised sentenced people in the community. Other divisions include Administration, Health Services, Rehabilitation & Reentry, Special Operations and the Post-Release Supervision & Parole Commission. We have a mission that matters! Description of Work If you are looking for a rewarding career in education, consider applying for the School Counselor role at the Youth School at NC Correctional Institution for Women. This position serves as a primary contact supporting student success by fostering academic, behavioral, and social-emotional growth for students working toward a high school equivalency diploma. Because the role requires flexibility and commitment, candidates with strong counseling and instructional skills and a solid work ethic will be most successful. This position is located within the academic school at NC Correctional Institution for Women, Raleigh, NC (Wake County). Reporting to the School Principal, the School Counselor is a core member of the education team responsible for implementing and monitoring the school's vision, mission, values, and goals. The counselor must be able to organize and deliver counseling, support, transition services, and related educational programs to groups of student offenders of all ages, creating a flexible program and learning environment that supports each student's abilities and personal growth within a female correctional facility. The counselor will also perform any additional duties assigned by the principal. Job responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Developing and maintaining a comprehensive and effective data-driven school counseling program with interventions based on NC state standards
  • Providing individual and group counseling and classroom guidance addressing students' personal, educational, and social challenges.
  • Collaborating with teachers and other staff to integrate guidance and counseling activities in the school curriculum
  • Helping interpret standardized test results, formative and summative assessment results, and other student data accurately and effectively.
  • Aggregating, disaggregating, and interpreting standardized test results, formative and summative assessment results, and student data accurately and effectively Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences Salary to be determined by qualifications and years of experience within a range of $55,320 to 86,148.
Salary Grade:
Based on NCDPI Salary Schedule This is a full-time, permanent and continuing position (40 hours per week) with state benefits. This is a year-round position. The Posting Will Close At 11:59 P.M. The Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)/ Management Preferences are not required. Applicants who possess the following skills are preferred:
  • Certification in multiple core subjects (e.g., math and science).
  • Experience in maintaining accurate records including, but not limited to, social and emotional skills, summative and formative performance, assessment results, and anecdotal notes
  • Experience conducting non-standardized education assessments according to accepted professional practices
  • Experience collaborating with teachers and staff to integrate guidance and counseling into the curriculum.
  • Experience in creating, maintaining, and providing oversight on the implementation of Section 504 plans
  • Experience communicating effectively with stakeholders, both orally and in writing.
  • Experience using technology productivity tools, software, and student information systems including, but not limited to, Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, etc.

ABOUT NC
Correctional Institution for Women Located in Raleigh, NC (Wake County), the North Carolina Correctional Institution for Women is the state's primary correctional facility for women. It houses the largest offender population in the state and serves as the support facility for the state's other female prisons. The campus-style facility sits on 30 acres of a 190-acre tract of state land and houses up to 1,700 offenders of all custody (minimum/ medium/ close) levels. In addition to providing the primary medical, mental, and alcohol and chemical dependency treatment for female offenders, NCCIW offers a wide variety of programs, including educational and vocational programs, as well as a variety of job assignments; this facility is home to one of the prison system's four schools for younger offenders. Application Process NCDAC uses the Merit-Based Recruitment and Selection Plan to fill positions with the most qualified individuals.
