Counselor Position Summary The High School Counselor supports the academic, social-emotional, behavioral, and postsecondary success of students enrolled in Street School. The counselor works closely with students, families, teachers, administrators, and community agencies to create individualized support plans that promote student engagement, resilience, graduation, and successful transition to adulthood. This role requires a trauma-informed, relationship-centered professional who can build trust with students facing challenges such as chronic absenteeism, behavioral concerns, family instability, mental health needs, poverty, involvement with juvenile justice systems, or credit deficiencies. Essential Responsibilities Student Support & Counseling Provide individual and small-group counseling focused on academic success, emotional wellness, conflict resolution, coping skills, and goal setting. Develop trusting relationships with students through consistent mentorship and advocacy. Conduct crisis intervention and risk assessments when necessary. Support students experiencing trauma, anxiety, depression, grief, substance use concerns, or behavioral challenges. Maintain appropriate documentation and confidentiality in accordance with school policy and legal requirements. Academic & Graduation Planning Monitor student progress toward graduation requirements and credit recovery. Assist students with course selection, scheduling, attendance improvement, and academic interventions. Collaborate with teachers to identify barriers to student achievement and engagement. College, Career & Transition Readiness Guide students in postsecondary planning, including college applications, financial aid, vocational programs, military options, and workforce readiness. Assist students with resumes, interviews, applications, and transition planning. Family & Community Engagement Build positive partnerships with families and caregivers. Connect students and families to community resources such as mental health services, housing assistance, food support, healthcare, and mentoring programs. Collaborate with outside agencies, social workers, probation officers, and support providers as needed. School Climate & Behavioral Support Participate in restorative practices and positive behavior support systems. Help foster a safe, inclusive, and supportive school environment. Support conflict mediation and re-entry planning for students returning from suspension, hospitalization, or juvenile detention. Collaboration & Leadership Serve as a member of the student support or intervention team. Participate in multidisciplinary meetings and case management discussions. Provide staff support and training related to trauma-informed practices, de-escalation, and student mental health awareness. Contribute to school improvement initiatives focused on attendance, graduation, and student well-being. Qualifications Bachelor's degree in School Counseling, Counseling, Social Work, or related field. Valid state school counselor license/certification (or eligibility for certification). Experience working with adolescents in alternative education, behavioral health, juvenile justice, or related settings preferred. Strong understanding of trauma-informed care, restorative practices, and adolescent development. Excellent communication, collaboration, and relationship-building skills. Ability to maintain professionalism, boundaries, and confidentiality in challenging situations. Preferred Characteristics Patient, empathetic, and culturally responsive. Skilled in de-escalation and conflict resolution. Flexible and solution-oriented. Passionate about supporting underserved and disconnected youth. Able to work effectively in a small, team-oriented school environment. Work Environment This position operates in a small alternative high school setting serving students with diverse academic, behavioral, and emotional needs. The counselor should be comfortable working in a fast-paced environment that requires adaptability, compassion, consistency, and strong interpersonal skills. Reports To Executive Director /Principal Employment Type Part-Time:
August through May (during the school year) Monday - Thursday (8:30 am - 3:30 pm) (additional hours as needed) All traditional holidays apply (basic school calendar)Compensation:
