Full-time, Exempt Position Summary:
The School Guidance Counselor implements a comprehensive developmental school counseling program that advances students' academic achievement, career readiness, and social-emotional well-being. The School Counselor collaborates with students, families, educators, and community partners to provide high-quality counseling services and supports that remove barriers to learning, promote equity, and prepare all students for success in school and beyond.
Duties/ Responsibilities:
Student Support & Counseling Services Provide individual and group counseling that addresses academic, career, social-emotional, behavioral and transition needs of students. Implement data-informed strategies and interventions to support student growth and well-being. Conduct annual educational progress and career planning reviews with students in grades 7-12, individually or in small groups, to support course planning, graduation readiness, and postsecondary plans. Program Development Contribute to the development, implementation, and evaluation of the school counseling program aligned with district goals and NYSED guidance. Design and deliver guidance curriculum lessons that foster skills such as career exploration, study strategies, social-emotional learning, and decision-making. Collaboration & Communication Collaborate proactively with students, families/guardians, classroom teachers, administrators, and outside agencies to address barriers to learning and support student success. Serve as a resource and consultant to school staff on issues impacting students' educational and personal development. Documentation & Compliance Maintain accurate and confidential records in compliance with NYSED, federal law, and district policies. Ensure timely documentation of counseling activities, referrals, assessments, student progress, and program outcomes. Assessment & Career Planning Administer and interpret career and interest inventories or other appropriate tools to support student planning for postsecondary education, training, or employment. Assist all students with career awareness, exploration, and planning activities. Graduation & Scheduling Advise students and families on course selection, scheduling, and diploma requirements, ensuring alignment with NYSED credit and pathway expectations. Monitor student progress toward graduation and provide targeted support or referrals when needed. Support Services & Referrals Provide support and appropriate resources related to conflict resolution, grief, stress, adjustment challenges, and other issues that affect school success. Facilitate connections to internal and external supports including mental health, community services, and prevention programs. Other Duties Perform related duties as assigned Qualifications Education & Certification Bachelor's or Master's Degree from an accredited institution (required). Valid New York State School Counselor certification (Pupil Personnel Services School Counselor) or eligibility for certification. Demonstrated knowledge of NYSED guidelines for comprehensive school counseling programs and graduation requirements. Technical Skills Proficiency in Microsoft Office and educational technology platforms. Working knowledge of student management systems and scheduling tools. Skills and Competencies Strong communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills. Ability to maintain confidentiality and uphold ethical standards. Skill in using data to inform counseling decisions and program improvements. Strong organizational and time-management abilities. Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team. Demonstrated problem-solving and conflict resolution skills. Commitment to equity, cultural competency, and inclusive practices that support all students.
