Job Description
The TRIO Student Support Services (SSS) Academic Counselor is responsible for providing comprehensive academic advising and support to eligible program participants to promote student retention, academic success, and graduation. This position supports the mission of the
TRIO SSS
program by delivering individualized services, coordinating student development activities, and ensuring compliance with federal regulations. Bachelor's degree in Education, Counseling, Student Affairs, Social Work, or a related field. Master's degree preferred. At least 1-2 years of experience working with college students, preferably in advising, counseling, or student support services. Demonstrated commitment to student success, retention, and academic achievement. A valid driver's license and safe driving history are required. Must have strong skills in providing excellent customer service and demonstrate strong ethics. Experience working with first-generation, low-income, and/or students with disabilities.Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge in Higher education systems, academic advising practices, and student development theory, Federal TRIO program regulations and guidelines, Financial aid processes and college retention strategies. Strong interpersonal and communication skills (both written and verbal), Organizational and time-management skills, Data tracking, reporting, and basic assessment skills, Conflict resolution and problem-solving. Ability to advise and motivate diverse student populations, Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information, Ability to work independently and collaboratively with faculty, staff, and community partners, Proficiency in Microsoft Office and student information systems, Ability to plan and facilitate workshops and student programming.
