JOB PURPOSE
Under occasional supervision, performs school counseling work diversified in nature, with the goal of increasing the academic, social, emotional and environmental strengths of each student; assists in building community capacity to participate in academic and personal change that impacts students' growth and academic status; assists in coordinating after-school and other special programs as assigned, and performs related professional and administrative duties as required. Reports to the principal.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Establishes and maintains confidential student case files. Attends faculty meetings for program planning and coordination. Attends meetings with staff and service providers to discuss individual student education plans and progress. Observes students in the classroom as requested; makes recommendations as appropriate to help teachers assist students in improving academic and behavioral performance. Develops and maintains a written plan for effective delivery of the school counseling program based on the state comprehensive school counseling program. Communicates the goals of the comprehensive school counseling program to education stakeholders. Maintains current and appropriate resources for education stakeholders. Implements developmentally appropriate and prevention-oriented group activities to meet student needs and school goals. Assists all students, individually or in groups, with developing academic, career and personal/social skills, goals and plans. Collaborates with parents/guardians and educators to assist students with educational and career planning. Provides individual and group counseling to students with identified concerns and needs. Consults and collaborates effectively with parents/guardians, teachers administrators and other educational/community resources regarding students with identified concerns and needs. Implements an effective referral and follow-up process. Accurately and appropriately uses assessment procedures for determining and structuring individual and group counseling services. Provides appropriate information to staff related to comprehensive school counseling program. Assists teachers, parents/guardians and other stakeholders in interpreting and understanding student data. Participating in professional development activities to improve knowledge and skills. Uses available technology resources to enhance the school counseling program. Adheres to laws, policies, procedures, and ethical standards of the school counseling profession. Collects and analyses data to guide program direction and emphasis. Monitors student academic performance, behavior and attendance and assists with appropriate interventions. Conducts face to face and/or telephone conferences with parents to discuss student progress and problems; assists in presenting parent workshops as required. Prepares and/or processes progress reports, case notes, calendars, monthly reports, memos, correspondence, etc. Operates a vehicle and a variety of equipment such as a computer, printer, typewriter, fax machine, copier, calculator, telephone, etc.; uses clerical, copier, computer supplies. Interacts and communicates with various groups and individuals such as the immediate supervisor, coworkers, other District / school administrators and staff, students, parents, and the general public. Attends training, conferences, workshops, etc., as appropriate to enhance job knowledge and skills. Performs routine administrative/office tasks as required, including but not limited to preparing reports and correspondence, copying and filing documents, answering the telephone, sending and receiving faxes, entering and retrieving computer data, ordering supplies, etc. Performs related duties as required.
QUALIFICATIONS
Requires a Master's degree in school counseling or related field of study, supplemented by two to three years of experience in school counseling, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Possession of Licensed Professional Counselor designation is desirable. Must possess a valid state driver's license.
