Job Description

A public high school counselor is a certified professional who implements the Tennessee Comprehensive School Counseling Model to support students' academic career, and social-emotional development. Core Responsibilities School counselors in Tennessee generally follow an 80/20 time rule , spending at least 80% of their time on direct and student support services and 20% on program management and administrative tasks
Academic AdvisingPlanning :
Assists students with course selection and monitors progress toward Tennessee graduation requirements Maintains accuracy of student transcripts, schedules, and four-year academic plans Identifies at-risk students and coordinates academic interventions to prevent dropouts
PostsecondaryCareer Readiness :
Guides students through college and career planning via tools like CollegeforTN.org Provides information on college admissions, scholarships, and financial aid, including the TN Promise Coordinates career fairs, college site visits, and visits from admission officers
SocialEmotional Support :
Delivers individual and group counseling for short-term personal, social, or emotional issues Provides crisis intervention and refers students to community behavioral health specialists when necessary Implements school-wide programs such as anti-bullying, drug prevention, and character education
CollaborationAdvocacy :
Consults with parents, teachers, and administrators to address student needs Partners with community agencies and social services for student support Advocates for equity and access to rigorous educational opportunities for all students
Licensure :
Must hold a valid Tennessee State Certification/License in school counseling.
Technical Skills :
Proficiency in Student Information Systems (SIS) such as ASPEN.
Interpersonal Skills :
