Primary Purpose:
To assess special education eligible students for counseling as a related service, report results, develop the IEP, provide therapy and support, and update progress. Assist in developing and supporting behavior plans and social skills instruction. Assist in monitoring student academic and behavioral progress.
Qualifications:
Education/Certification:
Master's Degree in counseling or related field
Texas school counselor EC-12 certification and/or special education counselor's certification
Other credentials as specified in the State Board Policy
Special Knowledge/Skills:
Knowledge of counseling procedures
Knowledge of assessing emotional and behavioral functioning for educational purposes
Knowledge of prevention and intervention strategies, including behavior management interventions
Strong consultation skills with an emphasis on effective communication (verbal and written), organizational, and interpersonal skills
Knowledge of the ARD process and counseling as a related service within the IEP
Experience:
Two years teaching experience
Major Responsibilities and Duties:
Conducts Counseling and/or emotional/behavioral assessments in order to determine eligibility as a related service.
Develops and implements an individual education plan for students, and progress monitor every 6 weeks.
Provides all required documentation to include eligibility reports, students' IEP's, as well as any other documentation deemed necessary for compliance purposes and to serve the needs of the student in a timely and efficient manner.
Provides individual or small group counseling services to special education students as recommended by the Admission, Review and Dismissal (ARD) Committee and as written on the student's Individual Education Plan (IEP).
Maintains accurate student records (e.g., IEP's, progress reports, SHARS billing tickets, etc.).
Provides crisis counseling and/or interventions to students demonstrating need.
Provides consultation to parents, administrators, school personnel and/or students about educational, emotional/behavioral and social concerns.
Provides professional development for staff and parents.
Works closely with students and teachers to teach and reinforce social skills development.
Assists in monitoring student academic and behavioral progress.
Works cooperatively with students, parents and school staff to achieve a positive climate conducive to resolution of conflict and positive behavior supports.
Fosters collaborative education efforts among staff by supporting the district' philosophy and mission and its commitment to site-based shared decision-making.
Keeps current in the laws, policy and procedures concerning special education.
Participates in professional development activities to improve skills related to job assignment.
Demonstrates loyalty within a team approach to working together for the students.
Maintains effective communication with colleagues, parents and students.
Performs other duties as requested by immediate supervisor.
Follow district safety protocols and emergency procedures.
Maintain regular and reliable attendance.
