exempt Job Summary The elementary school guidance counselor is responsible for helping students understand their abilities, aptitudes, and interests in light of the opportunities and demands they encounter now or may face in the future. Essential Duties Counsels students with learning, physical, social, and emotional problems through conferences held with the teacher, parent, principal, and the principal's referral. Works closely with classroom teachers to plan and implement guidance sessions tailored to the developmental needs of all students. Consults with classroom teachers, school principal, visiting teacher, school nurse's aide, nurse's assistant, and parents, relative to students and their problems. Provides planned occupational information programs to introduce students to the world of work. Maintains accurate and up-to-date permanent record folders. Coordinates and directs the standardized testing program in the school, and interprets test results to teachers, parents, and students. Enrolls and orients all new students to the school Acts as the liaison between the school and community agencies in working on student problems. Serves as a member of the Child Study Team and identifies, screens, and refers exceptional and/or at-risk students for evaluation and placement. Coordinates the efforts of all specialists working on a student case. Participates in and contributes to professional guidance and counseling organizations. Attends workshops and conferences to stay up to date on current guidance practices. Undertakes the continuous evaluation of: The nature and scope of the guidance services are outlined above. The functioning of guidance is an integral part of the total educational program. The effectiveness of guidance services. Performs other duties as assigned by the school principal. Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, and/or Abilities Required) Must possess a Bachelor's or Master's degree or a related field. Must possess or be eligible for a Virginia Collegiate Professional License or Postgraduate Professional License with appropriate endorsement as a school counselor. Must possess the ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing. Must possess the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, parents, and the public. Working Conditions & Physical Requirements Must have the ability to sit and stand for extended periods of time; exhibit manual dexterity to dial a telephone, to enter data into a computer; to see and read a computer screen and printed material with or without vision aids; hear and understand speech at normal classroom levels, outdoors and on the telephone; speak in audible tones so that others may understand clearly in normal classrooms, outdoors, and on the telephone; physical agility to lift to 25 pounds; and to bend, stoop, sit on the floor, climb stairs, walk and reach overhead.
