OVERVIEW
The Summer Academy is a Monday-Thursday program designed to support high school juniors and seniors in earning the credits needed to successfully pass Standards of Learning (SOL) assessments. This targeted initiative provides focused instruction and tutoring in core content areas, helping students strengthen essential skills, address learning gaps, and meet graduation requirements. The program emphasizes personalized support, strategic test preparation, and skill reinforcement to boost student confidence and performance. Through consistent, structured instruction, the Summer Academy is committed to helping students stay on track for graduation by recovering credits, improving academic outcomes, and achieving success on required SOL assessments.
GENERAL DEFINITION OF WORK
Under the supervision of the Principal, the Summer Academy School Counselor supports student success in credit recovery by addressing academic, social-emotional, and behavioral needs while collaborating with staff to ensure students meet graduation requirements.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Monitor student data related to credit recovery, including course completion, grades, and progress toward graduation requirements Identify and support students at risk of not earning course credit, providing targeted academic and social-emotional interventions Provide individual and small group counseling focused on goal setting, motivation, time management, and overcoming barriers to credit completion Assist with supervising students during transitions, including arrival and dismissal Communicate regularly with students, families, teachers, and administrators regarding student progress in credit recovery courses Collaborate with teachers and staff to implement strategies that support student engagement and successful course completion Support and reinforce expectations aligned with school rules, school board policies, and procedures Attend all assigned Summer Academy sessions in their entirety Participate in required training and data review sessions focused on student progress and program outcomes Monitor student attendance and intervene when patterns of absenteeism impact credit recovery progress Maintain accurate documentation of student progress, interventions, and counseling services related to credit recovery Assist in tracking and verifying earned credits and supporting students in meeting graduation requirements
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Must hold or be eligible for a Virginia license in School Counseling Demonstrated experience supporting student academic recovery and success, particularly with at-risk students, as evidenced by student data and outcomes
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT
June 8-June 25, 2026, 4 hours per day

Performance evaluation will be conducted using final student performance data (i.e., SOL performance and growth data).
