POSITION OVERVIEW
The Elementary School Counselor serves a vital role in supporting the academic, social-emotional, and behavioral development of students within the elementary school community. Working in partnership with educators, families, and outside agencies, the counselor provides comprehensive school counseling services that foster a safe, inclusive, and supportive learning environment. This position is responsible for delivering developmentally appropriate guidance lessons, facilitating individual and group counseling, and supporting students as they navigate personal challenges and transitions. The counselor contributes to the overall well-being of the school by promoting student resilience, advocating for equitable access to learning, and helping to maintain a positive school climate. As a key member of the educational team, the Elementary School Counselor collaborates in data-informed decision-making, intervention planning, and the implementation of multi-tiered systems of support across the district.
QUALIFICATIONS
Valid Washington State ESA (Educational Staff Associate) certificate with endorsement as a School Counselor or School Social Worker. Demonstrated ability to connect with and support elementary-aged students. Strong interpersonal and relationship-building skills with students, families, and staff. Excellent verbal and written communication and active listening skills. Deep understanding of child development, trauma-informed practices, behavioral interventions, and school-based counseling strategies. Demonstrated ability to manage sensitive situations and confidential information with discretion and professionalism. Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage a dynamic caseload and keep accurate, timely documentation. Experience working with diverse populations and fostering an inclusive environment. Valid Washington State driver's license or demonstrated mobility to meet job requirements. Availability to work a flexible schedule to meet student and school needs. Bilingual preferred.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Provide direct counseling services to students individually, in small groups, and in classroom settings. Support the social-emotional and behavioral development of students through proactive guidance lessons and responsive interventions. Deliver lessons that promote emotional intelligence, coping skills, social norms, cultural competency, anti-bullying strategies, and conflict resolution. Participate actively in school-wide intervention and support teams to provide a coordinated approach to student wellness. Offer consultation and training for staff and parents on child development, behavioral management, instructional strategies, and intervention supports. Collaborate in the development, implementation, and monitoring of 504 Plans and assist with special education evaluations and IEP team participation when appropriate. Provide immediate crisis response and intervention for students experiencing emotional, behavioral, or psychological distress. Conduct assessments and gather data to support student success and guide decision-making. Act as a liaison with external agencies and service providers to ensure wraparound support for students and families. Conduct home visits as necessary to engage families and understand student needs in context. Maintain accurate records and documentation in accordance with school, district, and legal requirements. Participate in professional development to maintain current knowledge and enhance skills relevant to school counseling and student support services. Utilize technology and digital tools to support communication, data tracking, and service delivery. Maintain a high standard of attendance and punctuality. Support a positive school climate through participation in school-wide initiatives, events, and committees. Perform other related duties as assigned by the building administrator or designee.
