FREEMAN HIGH SCHOOL
School Counselor Reports to: Building Principal
Summary:
The counselor, under the supervision of the building principal, is responsible for performing counseling duties. He/She counsels individuals and provides group educational vocational counseling services. This position may include, but not be limited to, the following performance responsibilities, qualifications, knowledge, skills and abilities.
Major Responsibilities:
ASCA National Model Implementation:
Designs, implements, and evaluates a data-driven, comprehensive school counseling program aligned with the ASCA National Model to support the academic, career, and social-emotional development of all students.
Targeted Academic Counseling:
Counsels students when adjustment, behavioral, or academic problems arise, providing strategies for individual differences in student learning needs. Communicates with parents and teachers concerning academic progress.
Social-Emotional Support:
Assists students to understand and overcome social and emotional problems, referring to community resources when necessary.
College & Career Counseling:
Provides specialized counseling regarding post-secondary pathways, including college admissions, vocational training, military careers, financial aid, and scholarship opportunities.
Master Schedule & Registration:
Responsible for the development of the master schedule and the student registration process.
Dual Credit & AP Coordinator:
Serves as the campus coordinator for Advanced Placement (AP) and Dual Credit programs; manages student enrollment, coordinates with higher education partners, and oversees exam administration.
Resource Curation:
Compiles and studies occupational, educational, and economic information to aid students in making and carrying out vocational and educational objectives.
District MTSS Team:
Serves as an active member of the district Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) team to design, implement, and monitor data-driven academic and behavioral interventions. Student Assistance Team (SAT): Participates actively as a core member of the high school Student Assistance Team to identify at-risk students and collaborate on targeted intervention strategies. 504
Plan Team Member:
Serves as an active Section 504 team member to help develop and review student accommodation plans. Provides day-to-day consultation with classroom teachers to ensure the proper implementation of Section 504 accommodations.
McKinney-Vento & Foster Site Liaison:
Acts as the designated campus point of contact for students experiencing homelessness or residing in foster care; coordinates district resources, enrollment rights, and stability services to remove barriers to education.
Community Relations:
Establishes and maintains positive, collaborative working relationships with students, staff, parents, and community groups.
Parent Collaboration:
Discusses students' academic, social -emotional and behavioral concerns, achievements, and test results with parents through structured conferences and related activities.
Data Analysis & Testing Results:
Interprets district test scores, provides results to students and parents, and utilizes data to inform academic placement.
Philosophy Integration:
Assists in implementing and promoting district and building educational philosophies, accreditation goals, and policies.
Records Retention:
Maintains appropriate, confidential, and legally compliant student records.
Policy Knowledge:
Maintains up-to-date knowledge of district policies and procedures pertaining to student rights, responsibilities, records, and attendance.
Professional Growth:
Participates in staff meetings, educational conferences, PLC's and counselor training to maintain personal, professional development.
Research & Evaluation:
Engages in research and follow-up activities to evaluate and improve counseling techniques.
Meeting Attendance:
Attends all district and building meetings as required. Other Duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
Must possess an ESA certificate with School Counselor endorsement. A valid Washington State Teaching Certificate is preferred. Must have a Master's Degree (MA). Must favorably pass the Washington State Patrol/FBI background check. Demonstrate mature behavior and ability to use sound judgment in communicating with students, parents, staff, and community. Demonstrated success by training/experience which recognizes all children as learners. Preference given for having current high quality references. Must submit a complete application packet. Terms of Employment:
Salary Range:
$52,690.00 - $104,643.00 per year; placement based on experience and level of education
Length of Contract:
This is a 1.0 FTE continuing contract beginning with the 2026-2027 school year; 182 days plus professional development; 10 additional days paid by stipend
Leaves/Benefits:
Medical/Dental/Vision through SEBB (School Employee Benefits Board) are provided for employees who work at least 630 hours per academic year; additional benefits may include sick leave, personal days, and holidays
