This is a 1.0 continuing position that includes additional supplemental days per the EVEA Collective Bargaining Agreement.Job Summary:
Under the direction and supervision of the principal or designee, the MTSS Specialist/Special Programs Counselor will serve as a collaborative specialist focused on student success, social-emotional support, attendance, behavior intervention, and academic progress. This position combines counseling expertise with student support facilitation to promote a positive, safe, and inclusive school environment. The MTSS Specialist/Special Programs Counselor will work closely with students, staff, families, and community partners to remove barriers to learning while supporting the culture of high expectations and strong relationships. This Specialist is vital in supporting students with disabilities by implementing IEP/504, and Multilingual plans, providing social-emotional counseling, and guiding post-secondary transition planning. They collaborate with families and staff to ensure inclusive education, focusing on academic, career, and personal success.This position will specifically support students connected to special programs and intervention systems within the building while coordinating services designed to improve student engagement, belonging, attendance, behavior, and academic success. The ideal candidate possesses a Washington State School Counselor certification and an Administrative Credential or the ability to obtain one.

Supporting students with challenging behaviors and offering strategies to staff. Promote a positive educational climate that establishes a culture of learning, belonging, and high expectations for all students.IEP/504/ML
Collaboration:
Actively participate in IEP meetings, ensuring accommodations and modifications are properly implemented in the classroom.Transition Planning:
Guide students through the transition from high school to post-secondary education, vocational training, or employment.Direct Student Support:
Provide individual or group counseling focused on social skills, anxiety, and behavior management.Advocacy:
Advocate for students' needs and ensure an inclusive school environment to prevent stigma.Consultation:
Collaborate with special education teachers, staff, and families to address specific behavioral or academic challenges. Advise, confer, and communicate with parents, EVHS staff, and school district personnel regarding student progress, attendance, behavior, intervention plans, and special program supports. Provide academic, social-emotional, behavior, and career guidance for students individually and/or in groups. Support students connected to special programs, intervention systems, and alternative supports within the building. Support and lead student intervention systems related to attendance, discipline, academic progress, and behavior. Support Administration with attendance interventions, restorative practices, and support systems designed to improve student engagement and success. Collaborate with Administration and Counseling Staff regarding at-risk students, crisis response, safety planning, and referrals to outside agencies or alternative pathway programs. Maintain appropriate and accurate student records, including discipline, attendance, intervention, counseling, and special program documentation. Support restorative practices and positive behavior intervention systems (PBIS) within the building. Support in-building MTSS processes to help support the identification, intervention, and support for all students. Engage and communicate frequently with families regarding student needs, supports, and progress. Interact with families, especially those experiencing crisis situations or requiring additional support services. Coordinate and collaborate with counselors, teachers, administrators, special programs director, and outside agencies to support student success. Foster connections with Middle School Staff to strengthen transitions for students entering high school. Assist with supervisionCareer & College Readiness:
Assisting students with career assessments, resume building,college applications tailored to individual needs, and track credits ensuring on-time graduation pathway requirements are planned and being met.Social-Emotional Development:
Addressing and supporting students with issues like anxiety, peer victimization, and self-advocacy. Attend and participate in administrative team meetings, intervention meetings, and professional learning teams as assigned. Develop and deliver informational presentations to classrooms, families, and school community events. Actively participate in professional learning communities (PLCs/PLTs) using data to improve student learning and reduce barriers to success. Maintain and promote personal professional growth through appropriate coursework, workshops, and professional development. Take necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities. The employee shall maintain a consistent presence at the assigned work site(s) and work the regular work hours specified by the contract. Professionally interact with students, colleagues, families, and members of the public. Comply with and uphold all district policies and applicable laws. Fulfill other responsibilities as assigned by the supervisor.Desired Skills:
Successful experience as a school counselor, MTSS Specialist, Special Programs certificated staff or administrator. Experience supporting students connected to special programs, intervention systems, or alternative educational supports. Knowledge of current trends in counseling, social-emotional learning, restorative practices, and student intervention systems. Knowledge of Section 504, IDEA laws, Multilingual and responsibilities related to student support services. Demonstrates a knowledge and understanding of current educational developments and effective interventional methodologies. Ability to demonstrate a thorough understanding of the instructional and learning process and effective student support strategies. Flexible in learning new concepts, cooperates with others, and adapts to a variety of assignments and conditions. Demonstrates ability to communicate clearly and effectively in both oral and written communication. Ability to handle confidential matters and information in a professional manner. Ability to handle stressful situations with grace while maintaining professionalism and a team player attitude. Ability to establish cooperative working relationships with district staff to enhance the completion of assigned tasks. Demonstrates strong problem-solving skills, conflict resolution, and relationship-building skills. Enthusiastic and displays an overall optimism and motivation toward student learning and success. Sets and attains a high level of expectations with a commitment to using available resources in a way that accomplishment occurs. Demonstrated ability to work effectively with a diverse group of students, colleagues, parents, and administrators. Demonstrated interest to participate in school events, district strategic plan, and community events. Demonstrates personal characteristics of flexibility, high-stress tolerance, reliability, punctuality, dependability, and an ability to maintain confidentiality. Ability to maintain high standards of professionalism and diplomacy in dealing with the public and district staff. Ability to lift objects weighing up to 50 pounds. Ability to work independently within the parameters of the job to organize, set priorities, meet deadlines, make sound decisions, pay attention to detail, and follow through on a variety of assigned tasks without the need for constant supervision.Minimum Qualifications:
Valid Washington State teaching certificate, no later than the first contracted day of the 2026/2027 school year, with appropriate endorsements as required by law and regulations. A degree with either a Special Education endorsement (preferred focus in Behavior Intervention) or Masters in School Counseling or School Psychology, with an Educational Staff Associate (ESA) certification. Washington state Administrative Credential preferred or the ability to obtain one. Successful Washington State Patrol and Federal Bureau of Investigation Fingerprint Clearance. Valid Washington State driver's license or evidence of mobility. Proof of Immunization (if born 1/1/57 or later). I9 Employment Eligibility in compliance with the Immigration Reform and Control Act. Completion of all district required training within thirty (30) calendar days from hire date.Work Environment:
The work environment characteristics described are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. The employee is usually confined to a work area; required to have precise control of fingers and hand movements; experiences constant interruptions and inflexible deadlines; must be able to work at a computer monitor for prolonged periods; and must be able to crouch, crawl, bend, kneel, and lift/move objects such as files, boxes, etc. The employee may be required to deal with distraught and/or angry persons and may be exposed to infectious diseases carried by children. The noise level in the work environment is acceptable to this particular environment and can vary depending upon daily activity but will remain within acceptable ranges.Evaluation:
The MTSS Behavioral Specialist/Special Programs Counselor shall be evaluated per the terms of the East Valley Education Association Collective Bargaining Agreement.
