TITLE Elementary School Guidance Counselor
REPORTS TO
Principal
JOB GOAL
To assist students in making educational, occupational and life plans that lead them to functioning fully as citizens. To intervene in destructive patterns that interfere with those outcomes, by designing, implementing, monitoring and evaluating a Comprehensive Developmental Guidance Program.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Masters Degree in Counseling for the Adolescent Level.
  • Demonstrated ability to select, administer, and interpret tests and inventories.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of current counseling methods in use in secondary schools.
  • Experience as a secondary teacher and/or counselor preferred.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB
  • Interpret, for parents and students, individual/group standardized test scores and other pertinent data to determine student aptitudes and abilities, and work with students evolving education and occupation plans in terms of such evaluation.
  • Remain readily available to provide individual, group and family counseling that will lead each student to increased personal growth, self-understanding and maturity.
  • Take an active role in interpreting the school's objectives and procedures to students, parents and the community at large.
  • Work with teachers and other staff members to familiarize them with the general range of services offered by the student services department to improve the educational prospects of students.
  • Initiate, assemble, maintain and interpret accurate health records, attendance records, cumulative progress records, activity records and uniform transcript records for assigned students.
  • Confer with parents and make home visits as needed.
  • Develop and activate plans to enhance positive self-concept of students.
  • Provide guidance and counseling service to assigned building for one hour daily before or after the regular faculty school day. This compensated time will be spent on related guidance tasks such as record keeping, parental contact, staffing and similar activities.
  • Provide and participate in in-service training as directed.
  • Work cooperatively with agencies outside the school, including juvenile court.
  • Assist teachers in determining appropriate placement for students through School Based Assistance Team and assist in coordination of Special Education Programs.
  • Assist staff in development/implementation of appropriate discipline procedures.
  • Assist in development of articulation plans for feeder schools and continued articulation and information processing for current high school students.
  • Provide for a systematic graduate follow up and placement program.
  • Have displayed ability in test administration, financial aid and scholarship delivery to all students.
  • Perform other duties assigned by the Principal(s), Director of Student Services, Assistant Superintendent and Superintendent.
