Job Title Career Advisor for STEM and Pre-Health Job Summary Reporting to the Executive Director of the Career Center, the Career Advisor for STEM and Pre-Health is a key member of the Career Center team, providing comprehensive career planning and preparation for students pursuing STEM fields and health professions. This position is responsible for supporting students and alumni intending to pursue careers in STEM fields: biology, biochemistry, chemistry, environmental sciences, exercise science, health science, math and computer science, physics and engineering, and psychology. The position provides strategic and practical guidance and support for STEM students who are pursuing graduate programs in these fields. As a specialized Career Advisor, this role also acts as a liaison with STEM academic advisors to develop curricular and co-curricular support services. Culturally competent programming and support of first-generation students are key priorities for professional development and student support services at Saint Mary's College. Essential Responsibilities Career Advising Conduct individual career coaching appointments with students, focusing on STEM and health sciences career pathways. Facilitate group sessions for students with common STEM and health profession interests and goals. Develop expertise in Pre-Med, Health Science, Nursing, Natural Sciences and STEM professional pathways. Establish collaborative partnerships with academic programs to best serve their students. Curate targeted resources, events, and online content targeted to students interested in pursuing careers in medicine, health care, nursing, or natural sciences. Provide foundational career services to students by appointment or walk-in, including career or internship exploration, resume advice, LinkedIn and other online profiles, and professional development support. Model highest standards of student-centered Lasallian values and commitment to equity, access, cultural competency, and professional development. Contribute to continuous process improvement by maintaining an ongoing feedback loop with the directors regarding faculty, staff, student and visitor customer experiences. Pre-Med Advising Advise pre-med and pre-health students to ensure they understand prerequisite coursework, shadowing and/or volunteer expectations, and standardized testing requirements for medical, dental, pharmacy, and other health-related graduate programs. Collaboration and Team Support Participate in team-based programming, student and employer outreach initiatives, and promotion/marketing campaigns. Support all Career Center events and programming, including workshops, employer information sessions, and career fairs. Represent the Career Center at campus-wide events such as new student orientation, faculty development day, and academic recruiting events. Collaborate on employer engagement, Career Fairs, annual Pre-Health Fair, and recruitment campaigns. Partner with faculty and staff across Academic Schools, Core Curriculum, Student Success Offices, and Student Life. Serve on designated campus committees as a Career Center representative. Programming and Outreach Develop and deliver programming for students interested in STEM and health science careers/grad programs. Coordinate STEM and health professions information sessions, networking events, and industry partnerships. Introduce first-year students to expectations and opportunities for volunteer, research and clinical experience expectations. Proactive and collaborative work with academic programs to integrate and diversify career exploration, preparation, and success in their curriculum and co-curricular activities. Build and maintain connections with local hospitals, clinics and summer programs etc. Develop and maintain a list of internship and volunteer/shadowing opportunities for pre-health students. Documentation & Assessment Keep detailed advising records for individual students. Maintain comprehensive records of the pre-health population: student use of advising, assessment data, graduate program applications and acceptances, and graduate school completions. Prepare annual reports on program effectiveness and student outcomes across STEM and health disciplines. Professional Development Maintain active membership in National Association of Advisors for the Health Professions (NAAHP), Western Association of Advisors for the Health Professions (WAAHP) and relevant STEM professional organizations. Stay current on graduate program requirements, nursing licensure requirements, and standardized exam scores and strategies (MCAT, DAT, OAT, NAPE, GRE, etc.). Participate in required campus training and workshops for student-facing staff. Other Duties asAssigned Experience and Qualifications Education:
Bachelor's degree required. Master's degree preferred.Experience:
Minimum of two (2) years of experience with a background in health or pre-health professions, health science or health career advising, or graduate health science or professional program admissions.Skills/Abilities:
Proficient in all Microsoft Suite applications and Google Docs, Handshake, Canvas, and social media. Knowledge of STEM career pathways and health professions education; Familiarity with medical school application processes (AMCAS, AACOMAS, TMDSAS) and nursing licensure requirements; Background in health sciences, natural sciences, STEM fields; Excellent written, verbal, and editing communication skills; Strong interpersonal skills to counsel students empathetically on realistic academic and career planning and collaborate effectively with external partners. Experience with first-generation college student programming; Commitment to the values and mission of Saint Mary's College.
