Category Schools - Orientation and Mobility Specialist Job Type Contract Step into a rewarding opportunity as an Orientation & Mobility Specialist working with students in the greater San Jose area for the 2026/2027 school year! This full-time contract position is structured to provide vital services that empower students with visual impairments to navigate their environments safely and confidently. Qualifications and Desired Experience:
Master's degree or higher in Orientation and Mobility, or a related field Active Orientation & Mobility Specialist (OMS) certification Previous experience in a school-based setting preferred Strong understanding of mobility devices, low vision aids, and instructional strategies Ability to conduct thorough evaluations and develop individualized student plans Collaborative mindset—the role includes coordination with teachers, related service staff, and families Strong record-keeping, documentation, and progress monitoring skills
Core Responsibilities:
Assess students' orientation and mobility needs within a variety of school and community settings Create, implement, and regularly update individualized orientation and mobility instructional plans Teach concepts, skills, and techniques for safe and independent travel Provide direct instruction and consultation as outlined in student IEPs or 504 plans Maintain accurate, compliant documentation and progress reports Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team to ensure comprehensive student support Help students embrace greater independence as an essential school-based Orientation & Mobility Specialist.
