Job Description
Peer specialists serve as mentors and role models and help connect individuals to recovery support services, as well as formal and informal community supports. They may also lead groups focused on increasing wellness and daily living skills. They work to support individual recovery and a recovery culture. The Peer Specialist is an active member of the Program/Team and provides peer support services to clients with serious mental illnesses and/or Substance Abuse Disorder experiencing episodes of homelessness and unemployment. As living embodiments of recovery after a serious mental illness or addiction, peer specialists give hope to the person served and agency staff. PS is an Entry Level position for individuals with limited counseling skills and/or experience. This position is also referred to as Behavioral Health Technicians, or Milieu Staff, which provides peer services, case management and after-care coordination services. It is also responsible for the health, safety, and security of clients assigned for supervision.
PEER SPECIALIST JOB-RELATED TASKS
Under the supervision of the Clinical Supervisor, the Peer Specialist will function as a role model to peers; exhibiting competency in personal recovery and use of coping skills; serve as a client advocate, providing client information and peer support for clients. As part of both the affected community and the clinical treatment team, Peer Specialist Case Managers provide support to counselors, other case managers, and clients. They perform a wide range of tasks to assist peers in regaining independence within the community and mastery over their own recovery process. He or she utilizes recovery resources such as best practices forms and training materials, booklets, tapes, pamphlets, and other written materials in the provision of services.- Responsible for addressing the client's after-care services within the community.
- Within the scope of services of Peer Services, addressing the client's treatment needs, counseling individuals, and facilitate groups.
- Responsible for the smooth functioning of the treatment center; if working for Substance Abuse Residential Level 2 program, make sure that all that is described in the client manual be strictly enforced.
- Ensure that client supervisors properly and fairly coordinate the functioning of the daily house operation in accordance with the client manual.
EDUCATION AND KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION
a. High School Diploma or Equivalency; bachelor's degree preferred.Required responsibilities:
