Job Description

Deaf Language Coach Works directly with students at Iowa School for the Deaf (ISD) either one-on-one or in small groups to provide additional support and assistance. This is a school year position. To learn more about ISD see: www.iowaschoolforthedeaf.org . Works primarily with multi-disabled students. Instruct and guides students to advance an understanding of academic content, social skills, language and communication skills, and to develop motor and perceptual abilities and daily living skills. Prepares specialized learning activities or projects by developing or adapting, with the assistance of the supervisor, behavioral objectives, and lesson or activity plans; uses a variety of techniques to improve communicative ability. Interacts with students to arouse interest, stimulate participation, and encourage responses. Assists with behavior management issues, including relationship building and the use of specialized techniques to prevent, de-escalate and intervene in situations posing potentially harmful behaviors. Supervises students in class, between classes, during meal time, on transportation, and during recreation periods and field trips. Completes progress notes and other records; observes and assesses changes and accomplishments of students.
Hours:
School day hours. Typically, 7:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m., Monday-Friday; School-year position. Schedule follows standard school calendar A successful candidate will bring or have the ability and desire to learn: Knowledge of developmental stages of human, mental, physical, social, and emotional growth. Knowledge of behavioral modification techniques or other instructional methods. Ability to adapt to specific learning capabilities or disabilities of the student. Ability to observe, record, and evaluate a variety of information and prepare related records and reports. Displays high stands of ethical conduct. Works and communicates with others to meet their needs in a polite, courteous, and cooperative manner. Displays a high level of initiative, effort, and commitment towards completing assignments efficiently. Works with minimal supervision. Demonstrates responsible behavior and attention to detail.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
Experience working in a school environment. Experience working with disabled individuals. Experience or knowledge of deafness. Iowa Paraeducator Certification Applicant must perform ASL skills at a minimum level of intermediate which includes: Fingerspelling is fluent, error free, and signed at a normal rate. Good knowledge of everyday sign language vocabulary. Able to sign 3-5 sentences on topics related to work and routine social topics.
